Nick..That is useful info. I will investigate further.

If I did go ahead then I would want a bar that is detachable so I retain my shins and also keep the lines nice and tidy.

Look what you have started, my poor wallet. Ideally, I would prefer a M5 Touring but I think that is a step too far for my wife.

Kevin,
There is a bar to fit your M5 that curls up from underneath so as not to damage the rear valance.
I think it is a Witter.
Electrics are easy, you dont need the alternator circuit, you just want lights.
I think Richard Baxter will know which tow bar I mean.

You wouldn't be the first to tow a track car with an M5.

I agree that it would be a great sight but I don't think it is a goer because of cost.

I spoke with my friendly parts guy and he priced the parts up at over £1000 before any electrics and fitting but I could do the fitting myself. The towbar itself is circa £450 before VAT and a new rear bumper is over £500 before the dreaded and it would also need spraying. It might be possible to cut the bumper to fit a removeable panel but that would require the construction of something to hold it in. So unless somebody has everything needed at much, much lower price that is the end of that idea...Cheers Nick but I'll just bring the spare set of pads.

1155's are my pad of choice.. they are more metallic than the cheaper 1144 and have a greater resistance to fade.. they work hot, but are still usable from cold.. they can make a grating sound though.

..the thing that does it for me though is that the box proclaims that they are for racing use only!

I cant comment on ceramics, they sound expensive.. and I have never tried DS3000 but I have heard some good comments about them.

Nick,

Have you tried any of these new ceramic compound pads from TarOx, EBC etc.. what about Ferodo DS3000s...?? What's the difference between the 1144s and 1155s.. still good for the ZeeM?

Now to fitting.

I haven't changed a set of brake pads for about 8 years. Anyone know of a link E30 M3 specific or tell me how. Any special tools?

Cheers

There are a reasonable amount of dust from mine but nothing that I would regard at too bad. Mind you I do have the black centres so it might show up more on Silvers.

Thanks chaps

Having read your comment re EBC and taking into account the price, I rung around. I spoke to a chap at GSF who also has an M3. They do the Pagid, but heard they make too much dust, so I bought the Textar ones at 23.50 plus vat, which were one of those used as oem so he said.

Cheap enough to chuck away if they are no good.

Kevin,
You know you can bring both cars don't you..
..there is no extra charge.
All you need is a trailer for the five and you get the reassurance of a drive home no matter what!

The brakes on the M5 were fine last year but as this will be the first time round with the M3 I'll bring a spare set, just in case.

Tarox G88's and Hawk HP+ and they seemed to brake 100% better than the standard OEM and never had brake fade.

Guys,
EBC are not the brand to choose if you use the M3 on track.. they don't like an intense build up of heat.. and that is exactly what you get with the E30 M3.. I cooked a set within two laps of Donington, which is not nice if you are up to your limit approaching the Old Hairpin!!
I know several others who will echo my comments.
Not that EBC are so bad.. you just need to check the application.. a lot of Caterfield drivers swear by them.. I'm afraid I just swore at them!!

If it is just a standard set up you want that will work on and off the track, you can't beat Eamo's suggestion of standard discs and Mintex 1144s or 1155s.

.. but as for that wear indicator.. throw it away.. it only measures one side of the car.. which I suppose is acceptable on smooth camber free German roads.. but not ideal on our bumpy, cambered blacktop, let alone a racing circuit that is mainly clockwise.

Don't forget that you can give your new brakes a good workout at Croft'04 !!

If I recall correctly they were around £200 for the front discs and the pads were £40 ish for the front set. I think that is quite a bit more than the standard ones but I had heard good reports on them and I'm pleased so far.

Just to keep Killian happy

Thanks, i was asking.  How are they price wise?  They seem to bear up fairly well from what you have said.  And right to steer clear of drilled, the first bit of standing water will do wonders to a hot disk!

Mmm, interesting....

If you are asking me then I have Pagid 8 Groove discs on the front. An added bonus is that they are slightly darker that the standard discs and blend quite nicely with the black wheel centres.

I'm not sure if they do any for the back as I felt ok with the standard setup, albeit new, on the back as the majority of the work is handled by the fronts.

I steered well away from drilled discs as I kept hearing stories of them cracking.

Now to use one of the "new" smilies..hmmm..

What grooved disks have you been using as mine are due a replacement soon, judging by receipts and mileage.  (Will find out for def when it gets serviced i suppose).

Do they do a grooved disk for the back and why are the rear disks bigger than the front?

kevin

I believe that someone on the forum used the ebc and recommednded not to use them.

as u know i have an evo II as well. heres what I tried and found best

new oem disks and ferrodo ds2500 - stopping power not great and bite not great.

new oem disks and Mintec fast road pads - v good bite and stopping power.

have also drained the brake fluid for mintek blue which has a higher boiling point.
