Folks,

Onno has done us proud having a wee dig about to sort out a RR session. A number of you have asked over the past wee while if we were going to organise one. The BMWCC committee are up for supporting it in our events this year and Shorty's having a wee swatch at 'the book' to see where to squeeze it in.

The plan is to go to Hypertech in Bonnybridge who will do sessions on a Sunday for £40 per car. You get 3 power runs with the owner in the car for a full explanation of what is happening. Spectators can watch performance on 40" TV screen. Also includes tea / coffee / biscuits.

Onno reckons there's nice friendly service and the owner will take time out to talk to you about any improvements which can be made and explain should there be any problems with the car.

The owner also can arrange for a hot roll caravan to be on site between 9 and 12 should we want anything to eat.

We need 10 cars or more to do this. So if you're interested then please get £40 to a committee member to confirm your place. We need the funds in hand to pay a deposit and firm up the date with Hypertech. If the event were not to get the numbers required then the £40 will be fully refunded.

Cheers,

Duncan

I'm up for that Duncan provided he can cope with automatic transmissions.

Can you check this out as the last thread on here stated that the RR couldn't cope with automatics for reasons that I never did find out?

Have you got a date in mind?

Andrew

Why would ther be an issue with modern M cars?  Is there too much bhp produced?  Might be just worth checking bhp and torque limits on RR.

It's got something to with the car having to stay in 4th gear I think Andrew, I asked about manual mode, but apparently that's no good either!

Ah, hmm, 4th gear I suppose is 99 times out of 100 a direct drive thru the gearbox.  It certainly is on Beamers.  The only gear reduction would then be the differential.  I suppose this would eliminate drag in the gearbox making for a more accurate reading of engine bhp.

With M cars my understanding is that it is the level of electronics in the car itself which causes the issue. Fundamentall, the front wheels not moving causes the car's brain to get very upset when the rear wheels are doing many MPH...

With autos I believe the prob is unpredictable kickdown. I have a vague memory of Star having an issue with an RS6 trying to launch itself through the back wall of the workshop despite being asked to stay in a specified gear.

Fundamentally RR days are a PITA for RR owners so if they choose to limit participants by number or complexity of generating an honest run then fair play to them.

Dude, I've arranged a RR day with local boys (FC) on 1st Mar as haven't had this car on before. Will let everyone know how they get on with SMGII and can ask about Autos etc.

'They' say SMGII won't be a problem but we'll see when we get there. Anyone is more than welcome to join us for some Sunday morning/afternoon banter. My mate is coming with his STi Scooby too and the Black EvoIV (FAE) that was in Banzai magazine recently will be there too.

If I get on alright, I will booked again (dates permitting) with this lot of reprobates (Read 'Gary Morgan'!!) just for the craic though.

I will ask Duncan at Hypertech when I go though regardless.

This may also be true on automatics....bummer

On E39 and E60 the front wheel sensors provide the information to the ECU for front wheel rotation speed.  This is used as inputs for ASC, ABS and the automatic transmission.  The input from the front sensors is used to determine the gearshift points.  Having as you say the rear wheels doing loads of rpms and the front wheels doing nowt could potentially upset the car big style.

Another thought.  When the traction control kicks in it is measuring the difference in wheel rotation speed.  When the difference between front and rear wheels is sufficient it then thinks that the rear wheels are spinning, cuts the gas and applies the rear brakes.  Now this 'control' won't happen when the traction control is off.  This would allow the rear wheels to spin (on a rolling road?) with the front wheels not moving at all.  But then saying that, when doing a wheelspin with the traction off it's not like the rear wheels are doing 70 mph which I imagine will be needed on a rolling road.

Hmmmm.

No problem with that Duncan, the RR owner calls the shots and I'll go along with that.  Hence all the questions before forking out 40 notes.

I've always been interested in finding out what my cars can produce in terms of bhp so I guess I'm jumping at the opportunity.

Keep us posted.

If my can't go on the RR without upsetting the car, I'll still come as a spectator if that's o.k?  Would be interesting to see Stevie's M5 in full flight on the RR.
