Folks,

Onno has done us proud having a wee dig about to sort out a RR session. A number of you have asked over the past wee while if we were going to organise one. The BMWCC committee are up for supporting it in our events this year and Shorty's having a wee swatch at 'the book' to see where to squeeze it in.

The plan is to go to Hypertech in Bonnybridge who will do sessions on a Sunday for £40 per car. You get 3 power runs with the owner in the car for a full explanation of what is happening. Spectators can watch performance on 40" TV screen. Also includes tea / coffee / biscuits.

Onno reckons there's nice friendly service and the owner will take time out to talk to you about any improvements which can be made and explain should there be any problems with the car.

The owner also can arrange for a hot roll caravan to be on site between 9 and 12 should we want anything to eat.

We need 10 cars or more to do this. So if you're interested then please get £40 to a committee member to confirm your place. We need the funds in hand to pay a deposit and firm up the date with Hypertech. If the event were not to get the numbers required then the £40 will be fully refunded.

Cheers,

Duncan

I'm up for that Duncan provided he can cope with automatic transmissions.

Can you check this out as the last thread on here stated that the RR couldn't cope with automatics for reasons that I never did find out?

Have you got a date in mind?

Andrew

Why would ther be an issue with modern M cars?  Is there too much bhp produced?  Might be just worth checking bhp and torque limits on RR.

It's got something to with the car having to stay in 4th gear I think Andrew, I asked about manual mode, but apparently that's no good either!

Ah, hmm, 4th gear I suppose is 99 times out of 100 a direct drive thru the gearbox.  It certainly is on Beamers.  The only gear reduction would then be the differential.  I suppose this would eliminate drag in the gearbox making for a more accurate reading of engine bhp.

With M cars my understanding is that it is the level of electronics in the car itself which causes the issue. Fundamentall, the front wheels not moving causes the car's brain to get very upset when the rear wheels are doing many MPH...

With autos I believe the prob is unpredictable kickdown. I have a vague memory of Star having an issue with an RS6 trying to launch itself through the back wall of the workshop despite being asked to stay in a specified gear.

Fundamentally RR days are a PITA for RR owners so if they choose to limit participants by number or complexity of generating an honest run then fair play to them.

Dude, I've arranged a RR day with local boys (FC) on 1st Mar as haven't had this car on before. Will let everyone know how they get on with SMGII and can ask about Autos etc.

'They' say SMGII won't be a problem but we'll see when we get there. Anyone is more than welcome to join us for some Sunday morning/afternoon banter. My mate is coming with his STi Scooby too and the Black EvoIV (FAE) that was in Banzai magazine recently will be there too.

If I get on alright, I will booked again (dates permitting) with this lot of reprobates (Read 'Gary Morgan'!!) just for the craic though.

I will ask Duncan at Hypertech when I go though regardless.

This may also be true on automatics....bummer

On E39 and E60 the front wheel sensors provide the information to the ECU for front wheel rotation speed.  This is used as inputs for ASC, ABS and the automatic transmission.  The input from the front sensors is used to determine the gearshift points.  Having as you say the rear wheels doing loads of rpms and the front wheels doing nowt could potentially upset the car big style.

Another thought.  When the traction control kicks in it is measuring the difference in wheel rotation speed.  When the difference between front and rear wheels is sufficient it then thinks that the rear wheels are spinning, cuts the gas and applies the rear brakes.  Now this 'control' won't happen when the traction control is off.  This would allow the rear wheels to spin (on a rolling road?) with the front wheels not moving at all.  But then saying that, when doing a wheelspin with the traction off it's not like the rear wheels are doing 70 mph which I imagine will be needed on a rolling road.

Hmmmm.

No problem with that Duncan, the RR owner calls the shots and I'll go along with that.  Hence all the questions before forking out 40 notes.

I've always been interested in finding out what my cars can produce in terms of bhp so I guess I'm jumping at the opportunity.

Keep us posted.

If my can't go on the RR without upsetting the car, I'll still come as a spectator if that's o.k?  Would be interesting to see Stevie's M5 in full flight on the RR.

Onno's had a word with the owner :

Automatic should not be a problem. The owner will get in touch with the dyno manufacturer to find out if there is anything extra he can do for auto runs. He has done auto BMWs before but not the larger engined cars. His feeling is it should be OK.

For those cars which get upset having their bonnets open at speed, the data cables are very thin and will sink in the bonnet rubber allowing the bonnet to close - this should cause no problems with engine temperatures.

Traction control will be switched off by removing the fuse on those cars whose TC cannot just be switched off.

Date picked is 15 March. We will need full payment from participants by 20 Feb.

AFAIK mate, 4x4 not an issue. There are 3 Scoobies going to the one I'm going to on the 1st. In fact, its mainly Scoobies your man Duncan at Hypertech deals with so I imagine your 4x4 will present him with no significant problem!

When I had my E46 M3 SMG, I took it to Star Performance on the RR - it was a combined BM and other owners RR day and polishy demo day.   They managed to get 2 runs out it after putting socket extensions down the bonnet pin locating holes (It seems that the car is designed not to go at all if the bonnet is not located properly - which I can understand!!)  Best way to try theory out is outside your house - try to drive with bonnet up and see what happens.

I had already had the car at 2 RR days with SXOC which I am also a member - and they both could not get the car to run which is really disappointing - this was before the day at Star.

Duncan has advised that the cables that are required to go under the bonnet are thin enough so that they can compress the sealing rubbers around the bonnet so your car can run with the bonnet down.

My E60 will flash a huge message up on the iDrive screen if you attempt to drive with the bonnet open.  This happened on my test drive in the first E60.  I hadn't shut the bonnet properly and got a warning message.  The safety catch was on and it would never have been flung open but being German and safety conscious it warned me.

Just as a matter of interest, why are cables needed between the car and the RR?  What are they picking up, engine rpms?

Andrew

Oil Temp.  You can't even measure the engine temp on an E60 from sitting in the drivers seat!

Sounds interesting, canne wait for a shot on it.

Certainly looks like I'll be home for this but seeing as

Might ask Duncan (Hypertech) if he'll sneak me on for a

Why not just get your name down and come along, the more the merrier  . 10 is the min number we need, NOT the max number.

Don't forget that filling the list was only step 1. I need money from all participants too please.

Tiko/Pardeep. 10 was the minimum to make the day viable for Hypertech. You guys are both welcome to stick down your money before Friday if you're up for it.

Is the rolling road rated high enough for Pardeeps motor?

I second that Crombers.  It would sound amazing to hear a supercharged V8 roar.

Just out of interest, what time does this kick off at?  9 am was mentioned, is that still the plan?

I've got another commitment later on the Sunday afternoon so would it be possible to get an earlyish slot?

Thanks

Andrew

I wouldn't mind giving it a go if that's OK for non BMWCC members. I've not managed to get any figures on this car so it should be interesting, please let me know if thats OK and if there are still slots.

Ok what are we gonna do about grub?

Are we gonna get Hypertech to organise the food van? (for 10 or so peeps, is it worth it).

Or are we gonna orgaise our own food? (BBQ, sandwiches, etc)

Or is each of us gonna do our own thing?

Do our own thing I think - Onno mentioned nearby shops if snacking is required. Starting at 10 with about 10 cars. ~20 mins a car = finished by 1.30. Mibbes hit a Stirling / Falkirk pub for lunch?

Hopefully, I'm bringing my dad with me.

There will be a great collection of decent motors there without an oil burner in sight or more like sound or smell

Would be worth filming to hear to sounds of all those big engines all full cry.

True, can someone film this event on digicam?? I unfortunately don't have one (or I'd do it) but I'll be happy to buy a dvd of the day from someone who did, obviously it would have to cover everyones cars. and their results.

I'll be bringing my new 10.5 meg cam with me to take pics. It does take video but dunno how good it is. So this will be a chance to test it out. Unfortunatly i don't have a full digicam.
