I had 4 new Dunlop Sport 2000 fitted 2 1/2 weeks ago. I have done over 1000mls on them now but I am still finding the grip poor to be polite.

Any power on comming out of any corner and the TC is going mad. I thought at first they just needed to bed in and maybe they still do but how long should it take. The car is handling like a slippery wheesel..

Its more fun but starting to annoy me.

Any Ideas.

Mick

TBH, I have never heard a good thing from anyone who ownes Dunlops...

My dad said he put them on both of his Audi's once and was totally dissapointed with them! They wear quickly and the let go in the slightest bit of wet...

My brother in law used to them on his Mazda until he got fed up of replacing them within a year! He used to say that you would get more grip from slick tyres than Dunlop all year tyres...

It had Dunlops on it when I bought it and did nearly 30Kmls on them and they had lots of grip. Thats why I went for Dunlop again......

Hmmm...not sure...

But 1000miles sounds an awful lot for the tyres to have not bedded in...

I decided to go for Toyo's on my 525I and they were a lightly light in the grip department for the first 2 days or so after I bought them. Then they started gripping like mad and have not let go since...which annoys me because I like making screetching noises when I corner quickly ...

Did you have your camber and alignment checked when you had the tyres put on?

Def worth the squid to get everything checked...

When I first bought my 5, the car used to handle strangly through the corners...almost like it was following a set of rails or something. The steering wheel would also not centre after coming out of a corner...it would stay in the direction that I had turned the car and continue driving in that direction...gave me quite a shock the first time as I had never felt this before in a car...usually when I accelerated out of a corner in other peoples cars, the steering wheel would pull itself back to centre...

Once I had the alignment and camber checked, they discovered that it was just slightly out... Once having it rectified, the car handled beautifully through corners with no problems at all...

I now pay the 12pounds odd and get the alignment checked every 6000 miles...with a good "Hunter" alignment machine...

BB

Edit: When was the last time you had it checked?

I had Dunlop SP 9000s and they are good, not as good as Eagle F1s or PS2 but still performed well. A bit soft on the sidewall for my liking though but I don't think any normal road driving will produce this effect.

Yikes... I used to get mine done twice a year. Irish roads mean wheels get knocked off alingnment easily.

Kin,

its just not right. The car was stuck to the road on the old tyres in the dry. They were well bald before I replaced them but they were still gripped well. I dont umderstand why the new ones are so bad.

This is a 525 auto so I dont rally it but its still very noticable.

I know it might be painful but if it is the tyres I would just replace them. Ask the place you got it off if they will take the tyres back for some money and they can sell it off as nearly new.

You can imagine the ammount of tyres I went through the 2.5 years of ownership of the M5, the difference between good and very good is vast. I can only imagine the difference between bad and very good.

Restricted by a rather tight budget this time, I recently got SP Sport 2000's for the front of my TDS and Prodigy 7000v's (they are a Yoko brand) for the rear.

Safe to say the Prodigy's (255s) are the worst tyre on the market. They are an absolute hoot.... and they make the SP Sports feel great!

Make sure the pressures are right... my yoke was pulling to the left last weekend - all because there was a difference of four PSI between the two tyres.

If you are not happy with your tyres or you don't have confidence in them, then I'd say change them. There's no point in bricking it every time it rains.

Let us know how you get on!

Feck sake €720 for 4 tyres (not M5 money but still)....... ill put up with them.... I am going to get the setup checked tomorrow and if thats no good then back to the tyre fitters for a scrap. I check the pressures every week with a digital tyre guage. I have tried them hard and softish...

Maybe Im not driving it hard enough to scrub them in..... must try harder.....

Ill let you know tomorrow.

The quality of the digital tyre guages can vary madly. We've had a load of them over the years and never once got an accurate one. But it may be worth trying a few others to give you a good idea of how accurate yours is (I'm not saying that your's is dodgy, but it is something to rule out).

As a general rule, you shouldn't trust the ones you find on forecourts around the country. They never read accurately - this could be due to the fact that they get thrown about the place so much.

I keep one of the old school slider gauges in my five. It's not very pretty or easy to use, but it seems to be bang on.

You paid €740 for all 4 of your tyres and you got crappy dunlop ones? Yikes you got screwed a bit there. Were the SP 9000 or Eagle F1s a lot more expensive?

As for tyre pressure guages, most will be accurate enough. Seriously, 1psi either way is not going to make your car madly unstable. Also I heard the silder guages are the most inaccurate of them all. Forgot where I read that.
