i am new to this area of car care as i havn't really been bothered to wax my other cars though i thought that i'd try and keep this one looking good. i bought the m3, though after 11 years and 100k miles, the paint work was a little dull. i first tried waxing it with autoglym ultra deep shine but i ended up getting the white wax residue all over the place. i then tried t cut colour fast in purple. i am happy with the way that this covers up the scratches in the paint but i end up with a weird mottled effect as can be seen below.
can anyone tell me where im going wrong? ive also seen 240v electric car polishers in halfords for Ł30- would this be of any use? any info appreciated, thanks. |

I've had that effect before on my 318....too much polish n wax I was told.
If I get the hazy result now I give the car 3 washes straight after each other then went over it with a clay bar followed by Autoglym super resin polish then Zymol wax...results: M3 the 318; 535 bonnet just waxed; Edited by Stone-IslandV8 |

ok, it seems i may have put too much wax on. i'll wax off then wax on again with less product and see how i go. is it just me or is it alot of hard work just for it to rain and spoil the effect?
thanks |

Last time I polished and waxed the E36 it came up like that, I think for two reasons - one: too much wax and two: bodywork too warm. I rubbed down gently (for a little while, light pressure) with a clean microfibre cloth and the hazing disappeared.

the heat could be the problem - i only ever clean the car when the sun is out. the paint gets quite hot. |

You should never wash or wax the car when hot as it can leave difficult to remove residue and causes more problems than you started with, isn't that right Mr 'detailer' pits? *He's the detailer, twisted detailer* Mike Edited by 540 V8 |

spot on Mike, on both counts I mostly wash the car when it's raining (easy pre-soak, wash and final rinsing) Best to wash a car in the shade, if doing it in sunny weather which, avoids water spots also.

Don't use that T-Cut Colour Wax stuff. Not good on premium cars. I find the
Meguiars 3 Step system the best. Halfords sell it. I also clayed my car a few months back and it made a big difference. Again Meguiars do a good clay bar kit. Wash the car. Don't dry it just spray some lube and clay the whole car. Wash again. Then dry with a shammy (spelling) and follow the 3 steps. If you do it in the shade it's nowhere near as hard to apply and buff off the cleaner, polish and wax. I find Meguiars applicator pads are great and Halfords do good microfibre cloths for buffing. Buy three packs of each. Just wash them in the washing machine and they're ready to use again. Also seing as you're a beginner I'd recommend the AutoGlym alloy wheel cleaning brush, Turtle Wax alloy wheel cleaner spray and the AutoGlym synthetic shammy (again). |

All the T Cut colour wax does is fill in the scratch with goop which doesn't
last. The Meguiars step 1 paint cleaner will remove a lot of these swirl marks and small scratches. The clay bar is a sticky plastecine type stuff. Basically you rub it back and forward across the paint and the embedded dirt particles, grime and tar etc. will stick to the clay. You keep folding the clay in your hand to expose a clean side. You MUST use plenty of lubricant or you could scratch the paint. You don't do it often, maybe once a year. And you can do the glass too. The difference when you run your fingertips over the paint after claying is amazing. It's a good idea to do the top of the car first and work down as the bottom of the doors and around the arches are usually filthy. @Stone Island: Those e36's look amazing. Edited by flyingalexf68 |

Ta....I hate posting those cos I realise how much I miss the E36 over the E46!!!! Agree with the above, meguiars clay bar detailer maeks a huge difference. Gotta admit that after Zymol waxing and buffing the car I then go round again putting a light spray of water on the car and buffing again....seals the wax or something but it does come up even better. HOWEVER....the M3 above was photo'd just before going to a CC day at Gaydon and had taken the WHOLE Saturday to get looking like that. |
