hi there, im new to bmws and need some help if anyone can help. ive had the car for about 2 weeks now and just replaced the cambelt, waterpump, thermostat(was running cold permanently due to lack of thermostat!). Ive followed the instructions from my haynes manual regarding the refilling of coolant and water and getting rid of air locks(maybe) the car runs ok but the temp sits just under 3/4 mark and when i take it round the block every time i accelerate the gauge climbs above the line towards the red making me a tad nervous. Also i cannot get any heat into the car itself(only blows cold) I would be very grateful if anyone of you knowledgable guys could help me out as i darednt drive it anywhere in case i damage it

They can be an absolute pig to bleed. This sounds like your problem, so I'll not frighten you with the rest of the "could be's" I'd suggest you take it to a local mechanic to get it bled, as damage that head, and it'll be expensive. |

There is a scrap yard by you, I have the number somewhere, they are a bm specialist and very helpful, with their own workshop, if you hang around online, I'l get it for you.

Hi! It sounds like you have a big bad air-lock in there. M20's are
notoriously hard to bleed! Do a search on this forum for M20 bleeding.
I think it's been covered before. If not I can tell you my own "crazy
Shaun" method of bleeding - takes minutes but gets frowned on!!!
Best of luck, Shaun |

Oh and be careful about what coolant you use, cast iron block, alloy head, and don't mix them, some of them when mixed form nasty stuff that dissolves alloy !!!

I will have another go in the morning and change the oil also, if that doesnt work then I will do the same. When I asked my brother-in-law(mechanic for 25years) what to do he said to take off one of the hoses that go into the bulkhead, as this should have been the blocked place. when water starts to come through re-fit pipe and all should be well. still no joy, even after doing it to all 3 pipes that enter the bulkhead. |

Nigel.... I cant seem to open up your advanced driving link. is it something to do with just teaching new drivers or do you teach to instructor level also? as ive been considering trying to do this(maybe) how hard is it? I can drive any coach/bus/lorry so i know how to drive safely and responsibly, just apprehensive about the teaching side

i like this reference to the Max Driver scheme, it's refreshingly honest Isn't Max Driver just the IAM Skill for Life package - rebadged and more expensive?
In short, yes. Max Driver is basically skill for life, but marketed and aimed directly at Younger Drivers, via Max Power's Lad Mag who's main audiance is Young Males. However, for the extra cost, you are garanteed a 25% discount from Adrian Flux, you are not garanteed to recieve this on basic IAM membership (although I did). |

So what's the crazy shaun method of bleeding then? I have a 525e that needs a coolant change, and I don't much fancy chasing an air lock. Noticed the other day that the mixture was a bit weak, so pulled the bottom hose off the expansion tank and drained off the excess, replacing with neat coolant. Run engine, repeat process several times then take for a longish run to ensure a good mix. Seemed to work perfectly well for me, but I'd like to do the whole system properly and get it fully flushed.

I drained and re-filled my e34 530iSE with coolant and it took me and two competent mechanics nearly an hour to bleed properly! They are a b**ch to bleed and need patience along the way. Good luck! Mike |

Hmm it looks like the "Crazy Shaun" method is in demand here! Tell you
what I'll do. I'll post a page on the net and you can all see it, save
me typing PM's! I'll try to have a page up by the weekend.
Cheers, Shaun |
