@ Robbie : used to the wheel size from the 328i - I think half the problem is i'm so used to everything else from the last one, that the different (& varying) rack ratio is upsetting some subconcious neurons in my brain. *fizzzzt - pooof* there goes another one

@ Lesurely - happy hunting!

TJ, i'd have to amit that the M3 does take a bit of getting used to. I wasn't so much at odds with the steering but more with the size of the steering wheel. I fitted a much smaller Sparco jobbie a while back and although it took me a while to get used to the size difference, i have to say it gives more feel but also more turns lock to lock which doesn't really help you i suppose.

@ Eamo ... interesting reading! I don't want to make the car too nervous with a super quick rack, but tis a bit dodge @ the mo - for a brief sec it makes me feel like tis understeering cos I turn & not alot happens, then you turn some more & tis too much and ya have to wind a smidge off again. Big adjustment from 328 rack.

(jeebus this "thinking of selling the 328" thread is growing legs, isn't it?)

Try going one step further on the web site David and it'll tell you they don't insure that car - happened to me with my 328ci.

I based my purchase on the quote they gave, but once you go to take the policy out they didn't want to know! They ended up covering me only because I was an existing customer, and I paid a fortune for two months cover.

Richie - interestingly, a '99 M5 (It asked for brand and cc's, so BMW 4991cc went in) on Hibernians website would cost me €1,917.77 to insure! Value €32,950, open drive, over 4 years NCB, Shopkeeper in Galway.

It voids if they class it as a sports car, but I'd class it as an executive saloon!

I then tried a '95 M3, 2991cc, value €15,500, all else the same.  €1,292.02.

It didn't give me model options, so it's just BMW, Value & CC.

Richie-Lovely car that is, running costs aside for a M3 evo that would be worth every penny.  Whats insurance like on it without getting a 4 grand excess?

ye - it was my old car

TJ

Have a look at a post by Pooky on the M forum re M3 racks. An upgrade for the 3.0 is to either put in a standard e36 rack or even a z3 rack!!

Steering does take a bit of getting used to - at first I thought it was connected to my brain, once the thought of a change in direction crossed my mind the car had already changed.

Once you get used to it, its very slick...... just measn you'll have to practice more

Cheers lads - all good advice. The back end is actually better tied down than the 328i - probably to do with the reasonably fresh F1s & me not really dogging it in 1st gear (2nd is keeping me amused still).

The big thing I'm having difficulty adjusting to is the steering. It is completely different to the 328i, and changes weight and feel dramatically (in an artificial sense) with a 1/2 turn of lock on. I'm taking bends in a series of bites rather than one fluid movement like before. It's grand @ 60-70mph as these are more open bends and there the steering gives alot of confidence. But in lower speed ones it's hard to judge just how much turn in you get. Tres annoying and it hasn't got any better (granted I've only done 220 miles in it, but that should be enough time to adjust?). At this point I much prefer the 328 rack even if it did feel a little more nervous when you were pressing on.

Well done TJ, take it easy getting used to the power difference. I got the tail out in 1st gear after a fill at the petrol sation the first day i bought it, almost a brown trouser moment. The bald rear tyres didn't help when putting the power down

Enjoy it but respect the power and get ready to waste everyone on the road ......M power = The only way to travel.

@Richie - Nice looking motor, now go get it man
