All this talk of car-changing has made me wanna scratch that itch. So I'm toying about an E36 M3.. which means the E36 328i has to go. PM if you're interested, and I'll give ya the low down.

(This doesn't violate forum rules, does it?)

TJ - I know where a fab 728 has just come up.......  would save you the grand that the wedding car rental would cost you!  And you could make a few quid back renting it out to other members for their weddings!!!

Also, how well would it look in Mondello - the only 7 there....

My brother has a silver 735i! Not that it'll be much use - getting married in Verona, and the villa we've rented has a 13th century church on the grounds.. dunno will they leave anything on the 30yards of grass between the two!

PS: My brother was up @ the April trackday, and for a wee while was contemplating taking it out!

Keep it T.J. just keep modding it a bit for little money (M50 manifold, BBTB, Cams, SS exhaust line and remapp, a set of lightweight wheels). You'll end up with a car almost as fast in the real world and cheaper to maintain.

Or you can just forgot all I said and bolt on a SC!!!  (if interested pm me )

I was driving last week with a friend and we swapped cars. he has an Mcoupe and not saying it's not faster, but the engine is so linear, only if you look at the tacho you realise how fast your moving. Mine in comparison feels more involving to drive. That opinion was shared by my friend (a 50 something ex rally driver) and he was trully surprised how well the lil 2.8l was going. Up to about 80-90mph the difference is minimal, above the M definitely have the legs, but I think a set of cams would greatly reduce the difference as proven by narusa and is lil 2.5l that was spanking us all on mondello.

*LOL* So Ludo is the fella on my right shoulder, wearing white. I think the fella wearing red needs to shout in my left ear pretty sharpish!

Cheers for the feedback Ludo. I agree with your comments, and with my chassis sorted as good as any M3 (in my opinion, having been in both around Mondello)& the LSD, mine is a good yoke around a circuit. But... but but but.... an M is an M. Ja know?

So we'll see. Depends if I make what I need to on the 328, and what sorta M3s are out there!

hmm... the white suited men are ganging up on my right shoulder now! Not to mention a few PMs from people telling me I should reconsider! Has my fiance put ye up to this?!

Ok.. I'll tot up what I could spend the upgrade money on under the 328i bonnet and re-inform my decision-making process. I know the only reason I'd be changing to the M3 would be the extra power..   ...and having my first M-power car of course! Maybe I should hold tough like I have been doing until I can get the right sort of E34 M5, which is my 1st choice M-power motor.

Buy the m3 - you wont regret it! More torque on tap than a 328 even with mods.

Don't forget the M3's bigger brakes, nicer seats, you can mod a M3 same as you can mod a 328.. Panel filter, loose the cats and youll be touching 300brake

I don't regret buying the M and Eamo is right about the torque but as  Ludo said above, the M only starts to come on song at 90+. But then Eamo also sold his and moved back to an E30 so its not all about the bhp.

I reckon if you've got a desire to own an M Power machine then go for it.

If you do move from 328 and particularly one thats as sorted on the suspension as yours (suspension and LSD were the biggest differences that I noticed - not the power) I'll be interested to hear how you find it.

So I suppose if I lived in Germany and had the use of proper roads then the M would be the car of choice, but for a bit of crack on regular roads, getting the tail out without killing someone there's not much between them - especially as the M has a lot more grip.

Just giving you my perspective and not running down the M power machines as I love them, but hopefully getting accross the point that the 328 is a spectacular car and in my opinion very underestimated

I sure did. The e36 m3 was savage quick in a straight line but looks wise was a bit boring and every boy racer that passed me in civics and the like had m3 mirrors which annoyed me even more!

Anyone can drive fast in a striaght line but going quick around tight twisty bends is a different story altogether. The e30 is awesome in this are and the rawness of the car and the fact that it is driver involving made me go back.

Thats not to say that I wouldnt buy another e36 - I would. There just 2 different cars and you cant compare like for like.

But Martin has had a 328 and an M3 and is offering sound practical advice.

But I'd still buy an m3 over a 328 anyday and prices are on a par anyways.

As per the PM I sent Martin, the extra costs per annum are around €1,000 extra between tax, insurance, petrol, & routine servicing (only the best went into the 328i).

All the advice has been great lads. Ye've all been there and know the ups and downs. But I haven't. And ye know yerselves - ya gotta try these things . I know the 328i keeps alot of cars in touch around the circuit (and a perverse bit of me loves being David to the M-power goliaths on the track)... but what sorta speeds would I be capable of with 286bhp?!? And I wanna do more trackdays in the coming years in the UK and further afield, so perhaps the M3 will be an investment in that regard. The 1,700mile spin to the 'Ring would stretch its legs no doubt . Silverstone is another big power circuit..

My main issue is money. Tight budget @ the mo for it to be feasible for me. If it's not, I won't be too upset. the 2nd prize ain't too bad!

Purchase prices for the 328 are still a good bit cheaper than M3, running costs for the M3 will always be more than the 328 though - not necessarily petrol, but tax/insurance etc.

Have driven 5/6 M3's, including Evo's, and personally I reckon you'd need to push them very hard to notice a distinct difference over the 328i.

For curiosity sake, was the M3 much sorer on juice than the 328?

What sorta of mpg did you get for each ?

Thanks

DAM998 - my commute was Portmarnock to Naas (M50 rush hour both ways)
328 - 95 Octane 30mpg
M3 - 98 Octane 30/31mpg
M3 - 95 Octane 27/28 mpg

And before anyone says anything, I wasn'r purposely driving like a granny!!!! That was driving along with traffic, no racing possible, odd time you might get to gun them for a few seconds but not often due to traffic and that was average over several weeks not a single run.

Its only my opinion but as the engines had so much torgue they would pull them selves along effortlessly at 1000rpm.  On a long journey the mileages did not improve very much (2/3 mpg) - possibly due to more enthusiatic use of the right foot.
City, with serious stop / go action. knock another mile or two off those figures

I'm regretting the stress and anxiety I'm feeling @ the mo trying to sell the 328i to get my butt back in one of those seats... that's what I am! Such tasty seats...

The 328i with ACS suspension has the match of it cross country (though a completely different feel - not edgier but a little lighter on its feet and slightly softer sprung), but in terms of straight line overall pace the M is noticably quicker alright, no matter what gear or revs. It's linearity means after a bit you'd get used to it, but bouncing between M3s and 328s yesterday, you feel the power difference alright.

didn't need the boob job - KFC & Pizza Hut in the office park I work in have provided me with the cans & no silicone required.

So yeah... the 328i is going to its new owner tonight! A BMWClub member who only lives a few miles away from me: Don (aka BeemerBoy) & myself shook on it last night. He was at the last trackday in his E36 320i coupe with M3 grey leather interior & BBS wheels, so he's maintaining the style but upping the ponies a tad.

Delighted tis going to someone in the club who loves his cars, and who will I know keep it in a fashion its accustomed to!  I hope it gives him as many trouble-free & entertaining miles as it did me (& Skillie before me).

And if the 328i is gone, it means something must be replacing it! Something Daytona Violet, with a crackle-black cam cover flanked by 6 exquisite throttle bodies. Something with Vader seats, sunflower alloys.....

yeah - I got a decent quote too. I'll stick with Quinn till my May renewal, and then see. They're not as competitive as Brittons right now, but are swearing black & blue my renewal will be alright!

Cheers lads!

It did over 30 mpg last night on the drive down. And alot less mpg when I extended the trip slightly via local back road. God the speed of it - tis bonorville everytime I crack open the throttles!!  Haven't really explored the handling too much besides a tweak of 2nd gear tail movement: plenty of time and I'll wait to the trackday before trying to get it moving around properly - 286bhp tends to make things happen bigger & quicker than 193bhp!!

Right now just enjoying looking out the 1st floor window down at it every 5 mins. I actually checked the weather forecast last night & decided it was worth going out in the drizzle and the wind to give it a wash so it'd be shiny today if the sun was gonna shine - glad I did!

I'm buzzin'!!!

Do ya want the bills too?  I've a feeling life won't be the cheapest with it. But tis a price I'm willing to pay for now. Until I get an E46 M3 or 993 Porker or NS-X (already planning the new car  - I've a couple of years to thing about it!)

What about an M5?

Could be lighter on petrol than the 200sx, 19.8mpg ain't great for a 1.8 Soon we will have shares with Esso, have club cards and get christmas cards from them. All in the name of fun and stupidity i suppose.....

Lovely car.

I see it still have Northern plates on it.  Is it not registered in the south?  And if so what way does that work - when insuring it do they not require it to be registered in the south of Ireland?  Spose they mightnt care as it no odds to them?

Posted By: UJM3
Date Posted: 20-January-2006 at 10:00

I had mine insured on english plates for 6 months and made no difference as long as i "intended" registering it..

Keep it on the northern plates as long as you can..

I always park in the same spot , english plates no hassel, changed the plates and got a ticket for failure to display tax... only had the plates on a week and hadn't got to the tax office yet..

Well done TJ, take it easy getting used to the power difference. I got the tail out in 1st gear after a fill at the petrol sation the first day i bought it, almost a brown trouser moment. The bald rear tyres didn't help when putting the power down

Enjoy it but respect the power and get ready to waste everyone on the road ......M power = The only way to travel.

@Richie - Nice looking motor, now go get it man
