How about a Renault Vel Satis (a quality alternative to an Audi, BM, Merc or even Volvo) pick up a brand new one from resource for a few bags of sand and you will have the added bonus of getting to know your local Renault dealer staff really well (don't worry it wont cost much as it will have a 3 year warranty). Should leave you with enough money to buy another M3

The huge price difference between the deisel and petrol 3 series totally negates the better fuel economy unless you do a huge number of miles.

yes, and I know they are excellent cars, just can't understand the premium that the diesel costs over the petrol version, tbh I would rather have a 330i/328i touring, but decent ones seem to be a little beyond my budget

interesting about UK Imprezas blowing engines/running costs, seems like the real bullet proof Jap car is the Accord, the only reservation I have about it is the VTEC business, and front wheel drive, having been used to RWD for the last few years I really don't want to go back, although I hear the diff is amazing

agreed I think wagons less so, but then agin we all drive (just) BMWs look at the image these have at present, also I could not care less about image if it is a good car...

I think my definition of a chav and yours are different.

I would have said a chav was a person who wear a fake burburry cap, lots of cheap chunky gold plated jewelery, a tracksuit with the bottoms tucked into the socks. They are also on the dole or playing truant from school and wouldn't dream of working for a living. Their main  asperatiuons in life are to get stoned, get their girlfriend knocked up so they can get a council house and sponge off the state for the rest of their lives.

I wouldn't class the max power brigade as chavs since to be able to afford a stupid bodykit for you corsa you need a job, or at least you need a job to get finance even if you can't afford to pay it back.

I used to work at a place that PDI'd Fronteras when they first came out. We had to take them out for test drives to make sure everything was okay. We'd run them around getting some alarming lean angles round the bends (they corner better than you would imagine although the ground gets pretty close to the window..) and when we brough them back they would be pouring with smoke from underneath where all the wax coating was being burnt off.

They make a great noise when you lock the wheels up too!

Plenty of imprezza's in the 4-5K bracket now and in the arms of the Max Powered brigade

Oh and that lotto lout Michael Carrol has an Evo with the words "KING OF CHAVS" loggo'd all down the doors!..

Go on to scoobynet again and search for chav, there all up in arms about it!

MAF sensors also go and on an imprezza this can cause the whole engine to lunch itself

97/98 models suffer piston rock, 2001 WRX's are fragile,transmissions and clutches are not exactly long lasting, the list goes on

Ive had one, bought the T shirt and watched the film, some go on and on but believe me they are tempremental beasts and require more upkeep than an M car

Well, I've just bought a Fontera.  I wanted something big to lug around building materials and deal with trips to the dump - basically any job where I don't want to take the M3 out.  Thought about an Omega, but it was a bit boring.  The Frontera will happily carry loads of stuff, and I'm also planning a few off-roading jaunts, a whole new world of petrol-powered fun for me !

FWIW,

In your position, if I wasn't fussed about RWD I'd buy a Type-R Accord all day long. Honda's are absolutely bullet proof. I was considering ditching the M3 and getting an S2000 (I was annoyed at old car things and had borrowed a friends E46 and fancied a new car for hassle free fun) so I looked into servicing. Their BIG service was something like £350.
I think it was on TG or 5th Gear when Damon Hill drove one and said it was the best FWD car he had driven as they have some crazy mechanical lsd. Yes he was on their payroll (I think he did an ad for them?) but even so.

My girlfriend used to have an old V-tec Civic and when the cams change it is fab. Honda make great cars.

i've heard the uk imprezas are very reliable. It's the special editions and the imports which are the problem as they are not mapped to run on UK fuel. My mates P1 melted a piston because subaru used a jap ECU which thought it was running 100 octane fuel, bit disapointing to think a manufacturer would over look this.

I wouldn't include any of the "crazy gang" Scooby/Mitsu's in the equation. They are fairly obvisouly, with their mad service schedules, going to be out of the ball park.

I had one and it wasnt uncommon to get single figure MPG on a real good thrash...and I dont think Imprezza's are that reliable, I know we have problems with our BM but they aint as highly strung as an Imprezza

have a scan thru here and search for engine blow ups/reliability

Pesronally, every one of their cars in the last 6 years has had some issue with it, that you end up having to deal with. The well engineered thing is a myth, they over engineer plenty, but key items are usually under engineered.

Get something Japanese.
