Not sure if it's the same cost  on an E30, but on a '94 M5 EDC is £600 per corner to fix! But I'd agree it's lots of fun in the wet!

yeh but I've seen this lovely Sport Evo for sale...

Hi jaseb,

I was in the same boat as you at the beginning of this year, having a standard1 while wanting a Sport Evo.I ended up buying the Sport Evo before selling my standard M3 2 months later.I waited 10 months before I found mine, with a little help from some already on here.

Good luck mate

I've found one AND a buyer for mine but my Dad's been trying to talk "sense" into me as the service book has got lost at some point in the cars life! It's an Italian import and you know what they're like!!! (and before anyone has a go one of my best mates is Italian so I know fromfirst hand experience!!)

Dad's right to an extent - who in their right mind would hand over £12.5k for a car without service history - I guess I must be unhinged then as he had me swaying for a little while but I think I'm back on the correct straight and narrow course now

I to would be wary of a car without a history.Have you had the Sport Evo check out yet.I.E. At a dealer/specialist,what's the milage/KMs?

There are 2 red one's for sale at www.bmwmpower.co.uk for 12,500/12,750.I have no connection with then, just pointing them out.

I know what you are going through as I was not to sure about parting with £12,750 for a 12 year old car(maybe it has something to do with being a Scot)but in the end up I took the plunge & am delighted with my car.

Good luck mate

I've sent an e-mail to BMW GB to try and find the dealer who sold it to see if they have any history, I understand it camefrom Rome and as luck would have it I have a buddy in Rome so will send him round to see if he can get any info.

It's got 80,000kms on the clock so not many at all! It's for sale from a specialist who I trust (Nigel Moseley) so hopefully all will be well and should be a while before any big bills I'm hoping!

Ask them if they'll do you a warranty.I've seen the 1 you are looking at,only in pic's though.I was keen on it as well, but was a couple grand out of my price range.Looked a nice 1 though.

Keep us posted on how you are getting on

Cheers Gary

Nigel has no probs on the warranty front (probably not an offocial one but enough to keep me happy), for him to buy a car without the history unless he was sure is not a bad guarantee in itself apparently. I have the previous owners/importers name and address and as it's not far from me I'll be paying a cheeky visit out of the blue!

He's got lots of lovely cars, 2 or 3 touring cars, CSL, Z1's, mint non evo M3 with 30k and fully Sport evo'd up and a whole host of others, all in all not a bad collection.

cheers

Jason

I've seen this car too - thought it was a good, honest example - not the best but then again the asking price is not £15-16K+ It's fitted with a Hartge suspension if I'm right.

Are Italian imports that much worse than German ones? When was this car imported - it must have been very expensive back in 1990 (what with the Italian tax on cars over 2 litres) so I would have thought the original owner must/should have looked after it well.

I also know of one person who looked at it and didn't buy it because of this lack of history. I'd trust Nigel's opinion - if it feels "tight" during the test drive and doesn't have any obvious failings (check that air con system works for instance) - go for it. My current M3 came with little history from Germany - but now has lots from the time I've had it! A good "current" history is almost as important as lots of old stamps in a service book.

That's what Nige said too...

But as it goes I believe him!

This Italian import seems to be along the same lines as the Dutch import I currently own - Tops! It was imported in 1998 with 77000 kms and has done about another 4k!

My Dutch car is running along the same lines as yours then Mark, little history when bought and stacks now. Apparently the aircon is not charged but I'll get Pete to put the car up in the air and check the bracket condition - Ijust left mine offin the end as the bracker cracked twice and I don't really rate the aircon in these cars anyway.

Gary - let us know when you're coming and I may join you!

Jaseb

You say that you don't rate the E30 air con system - anything in particular, or is it just the extra complication and expense?

I've been thinking if it's worthwhile having in my next car (hopefully a Sport Evo). The only time I've experienced it is in a 325 convertible in the south of Spain a couple of years back - and they need it there! Can't say I thought it was very powerful.

Maybe I'll be better off without (and save some weight into the bargain). I remember in at least one old magazine roadtest they complained of the air con system causing the car to stall in traffic - any truth to this?

Extra complication and expense mainly, as the M3 engine isn't known for it's smoothness, the compressor bracket has a habit of vibrating then cracking and falling off! This is a bad habit in my book, as it's happened on my car twice now - once in the south of France in August! Definitely rate the aircon in hire cars as a better option!

Also even when it was working it wasn't that strong and like you say affects the idling ability of the car - it saps that much power.

Will do mate .I think it's just in the planning stage at the moment,as soon as it is finalised I'll drop you a line. It would be good to meet up, maybe we can persuade JohnW to come along also. When do you think you will get the sport evo? What about you as well Mark, when are you likely to get yours & are you up for a visit when we come down?

Well I think the chap wants my car this weekend but I really need to put him off for a week, might end up with a hire car if not. Should have the evo for next weekend with luck.

Just in time for Christmas!

Gary

It'll be some time before I can get hold of a Sport Evo - unfortunately!! But I should still have my current car early next year - in fact I was going to sell it soon but I've been thinking of all the money I've spent on it over the last four years and hate the thought of selling it too cheap!

I may try and do what John W has done and have 2 M3s - my current one for track use (it's got a rollcage etc) and get hold of a Sport Evo for regular road use (I hate to see "totalled" Sport Evos like the one I saw at Munich Legends a couple of years ago which was wrecked at the Nurburgring). It will all come down to finances in the end!

I'd be up for a meet up sometime, though I don't know where I'll be living at the time. I may be moving back to Edinburgh early in the new year - in which case I'll be heading to Nigel's place for a new MOT and Inspection 2 around March-April.

Hopefully I'll see you when you head south.

2 M3s........the last words of a condemned man. Well.......look at me, I'm fine but I could do with a lottery win. And it's insurance time again in January. Great.

John

I could use the lottery win myself! And that's with just one M3! The insurance question and general running costs does worry me; but at least you can reduce the cost slightly by insuring one of your cars on a classic policy.

If I wond the lottery I'd probably treat myself to an ex-works team DTM racer circa 1991-92 - Munich Legends has a couple in the showroom at present - with 350-370bhp, now that would be interesting to try out!

Seriously though - anybody been round a track in an ex-racer? Any comments on the experience.

Talk to Nige, he's got 3 touring cars, a DTM, Labatts BTCC and a works Italian jobby, was going to enquire about renting one for a track day...

(he writes "in his dreams")

I understand he's been round the Nurburgring in at least one of them, I think Munich Legends takes theirs there annually too, if you spend your pennies there it's got to be worth trying to blag a ride if not a drive!

Does Nigel rent out his cars? I've seen the ex-Emmanuele Pirro Italian Sport Evo - I remember speaking to a couple of guys at the Brooklands meet who've seen it running - apparently sounds fantastic.

I would love to "blag" a ride in either one of Nigel's or one of M/Ls cars - just got to make sure I'm in the right place at the right time for once.
