Topic: 318iS Info Posted: 27-January-2005 at 16:52 |
Hi,
Hey im 18 and i have a yrs ncb. I drive (provisionally, on 2nd test soon) a 306 1.4 8v, and im 19 in July.
Im looking at 318iS' but have a few questions?
1. How roomy r they inside for the driver ( i get cramp just going to plymouth, which is just 23 miles away).
2. Because they r 330 kg heavier than my 306, but have 140 hp and my
306 is 75.... will they be noticablly faster, slower or about the same ?
3. What insurance grp r they ? NUD wouldnt gimme a quote FC...... but
they r only 1.8 (or 1.9) in some cases....... so cant be THAT bad can
they ?
4. are they six cylinders? are the 320i's six cylinders ? is it worth
getting a 320i other the 318iS... and is there an s version of the 320i
?
5. what are both models like for tuning, on the 1.8 or 1.9
especially... what hp and torque would i c with a full scorpion exhaust
system, k&n kit and chip ?
6. Can u make these cars loud with an exhaust..... but not so they drone on the motorway ?
7. whats the average mileage for a P reg now ? should i avoid cars with other 100 000 miles ?
thanks alot!
J

1. are you talking about an E30 or E36? Anyway, both are comfortable in my opinion! 2. the 318is will be much faster than a 306! 3. no idea 4. 4 cyls. The 320i is 6. The 318is is faster and lighter. The 320is is a small cc version of the M3 without the appearance of the M3. 5. both models could be tuned somewhat to get approx 20hp (IIRC) 6. My 320i had a lovely tune from the factory exhaust 7. 100k miles is not much on a well maintained car.

I prefer the E36 to the E30 for long journeys.
Going from York to Fort William, I had to stop to stretch my legs when driving the E30, as I used to get cramp.
In my E36 I have no problem so far with cramp, 600 odd miles+ at a time and no twitches. Only stopped for petrol and a kip.
Both are cramped in the back seat area if you and passenger are tall, so only a 2+2 in this respect.
Both were automatics btw.
E30 320i, E36 318ti.
Welcome to the forum btw.

cheers for the welcome!
its the e36 im looking at!!!!
do they come with leather, and air con? the 318iS ?
and styling wise id want a m3 kit, scorpion DTM exhaust (old skool
hehe) and im not sure about rims, maybe deep dish ones or the m3 evo
ones :D
thats all it needs really styling wise!!!
anyone have pics of 318iS ???
the only thing i like more bout the 320 is the six cylinder sound! but
maybe with an exhaust and induction kit the 318iS would sound beefy too
?????
cheers, J

Leather is an option as far as I know, sport seats with the front ajustment. Air con is an option on most models, not sure if it was standard, I doubt it.
The engines are ok, my compact has the 318 M42 engine and I've no complaints as yet with it (140 odd bhp), it's pretty nippy, but then again mine will be slightly more compared to a sallon as its lighter.
Have a look through past posts, there are loads of pics around. (do a search for 318is for example, it might bring something up)

My 318iS Sport with M3 alloys. It's a 1997 so has the M44 1.9 engine. I think they are group 12/13.
Good luck in your search.

Over the years I've had 3 318iS coups-all have Mtech suspension and some had the Mtech bodykit.
Photos of my last one are at my site, click on the M3 link in my sig then look for the 318 photos-should have before and after photos plus with and without piperX induction kit.

is the 132mph the max the engine will go to.... or the max the gearing
will go to.... ie if i tuned the engine, would the gearing not allow me
to go faster..... just get there quicker ?

You might get a bit more top speed out of it but you would have to move the peak power further up the rev range. It doesn't matter if you have 140bhp or 540bhp, if it's at the same RPM you won't go any faster with the same gearing. If you did tune it up you could always change the diff for one of a 328 which will be higher geared.
BTW just because your mates Fiesta goes off the speedo doesn't mean it's going that fast. First of all speedos tend to read positive especailly at higher speeds, so it's probably reading at least 10% over. Secondly Ford speedos are notoriously innacurate at higher speeds. A mate of mine had an escort 1.3 that was a knacker and it would read 120mph even though it was obvious we weren't even going over 100.

hi, don't mean to hi-jack but I too am looking to buy a 318. I was hoping someone can offer hints and tips at what to look out for when buying one. i.e what major parts should have been replaced at specific intervals, what common faults to look out for etc etc etc. Many thanks

If you are looking at an early M42 engine, make sure the timing case profile gasket has been changed. BMW used a cheap gasket during manufacture and they WILL fail, no ifs or buts. The gasket its self is only a couple of quid but it is located under the head gasket so the head and timing gear have to come off to replace.
Expect to pay upwards of 350 to get this done.
There was also a recall for the steering column knuckle. If this has not been done then any BMW dealer will do this free of charge.
Don't let this scare you though.I have had mine for 4 years and it has been a great car.
PS it is insurance group 15.

BMW used model codes eg E30, E36 instead of Mark 2, Mark 3 etc.
A 93 or 94 model would be an E36 and would have a 1.8 litre 16v engine (M42).
Insurance isn't too bad. I'm 28 with full protected no claims and pay less than 400 fully comp.

im 17................... if you add two zeros on the end of my age you will have my quote! I just couldn't bear driving a fiesta or the like! plus i'm 6ft 2 and enjoy the roomier cars! And seeing as everyone one is dead set that new drivers are going to crash soon after they pass their test, i'd rather have a more solid car!

I'm afraid you'll have to bite the bullet mate.
Either pay 1700 per year on a 2500 car or buy a Micra.
Either way, dont crash!
Seriously though my mate had a Pug 306 XS when he was having insurance nightmares. Quite quick, handles fantastic and only group 5 insurance.
