Anyone fancy another one?  We are thinking of using Mondello in mid-October and I'm trying to get an interest check for it. If you are interested, please email me asap ( mailto:bmw@kbannon.com - bmw@kbannon.com ).

Entry fees will be dependant on the amount who turn up, so we are estimating it to be at least the same as before.

Also, any comments or recommendations are appreciated.

e-mail winging its way to you, Killian - it'll give me a chance to stretch the threes' legs etc..

Are you thinking about the National or International this time? I suppose the International circuit would require a weekday slot, which'd reduce popularity greatly.

Lads, I've been reading about the awful plight in India recently. GDP is dramatically down, economic crisises are two-a-penny, unemployment is reaching epidemic proportions....

I think it is about time we, as a club, showed some social conscience. In order to help some of the indigenous industry in India, I urge you all to subscribe to Octobers Better Driving Day. Our small efforts to cremate tyres will help Indias rubber plantations get back on their feet and prosper. Perhaps we should nominate Robbie as special envoy / consul to India? God knows he can cremate M3 / 530 / M5 rubber with the best of em...

Getting the full curcuit depends on whether we get enough numbers or sponsorship. At the mement we are far from having enough for the national never mind the international circuit

what about a combined bike and car day same as last time?

Im working on it but we were fairly lucky about numbers last time. The club office (who has to fork out any balance not earned by participants) doesn't like seeing low numbers a fortnight before the day and therefore it is essential that as soon as the app forms are available, people must get their payment in.
The last day almost didn't go ahead due to a low level of people who had paid two weeks before the day!

If we can get a sufficient level of interest (& payments!) we will book the entire circuit - tarzan* here we come!

* tarzan is a double right hander, the first RH is at the bottom of a long downhill stretch!

Head office should be given the heads up this time to carefully check whether people have ticked EUR100 or STG70, as they took STG100 from my VISA card. After bringing it to their attention they sent me back a STG cheque for the excess that took over 3 weeks to arrive, because they had used some very cheap postage. Then I lost out a bit then on the exchange rate and bank transaction charge plus the hassle of having to go into town into the bank. Don't mean to be b****ing, but these type of admin things shouldn't really happen.

@ Aidan - ahh yes - twas your beast of a yoke that was circulating wasn't it .... that's some car. You see all the M3s going around and ya go "yeah, some machines", but when I saw the 5 coming out of Dunlop and bellowing down the straight it confirmed the M5 is the daddy.

@ Killian - that's the set of corners I wanna have a go off - I reckon coming into the 1st right that you are coming from the fastest part of the circuit into one of the slowest - best get the Pagids fitted before then!

If we book the full international circuit then cost could rise to €150+. Would people be prepared to pay that (I would )...

...... i think I would be too. I'd go up to around E160 for the full circuit. how many others would be though? Whilst there is a bunch who have done the National, that sort of money might make the whole exercise a bit too expensive for those looking to introduce themselves to it. How many @ the last one were newbies & how many were seasoned campainers from the inaugural day I wonder?

I'll be a newbie at this event, but would be interested in the international for the variety that the longer course would give, even if the cost is a bit higher.

if it does go up to the price that Brendan has mentioned then it is actually on par with the charge Mondello has for just the National (€170) amd much cheaper than their charge for the International (€200) for the afternoon.

I would prefer the international as I found the national circuit too tight with too much braking and very hard on the tyres.

anybody suggest  a decent set of pads and fluid for the e39 M5 and where  i can get them?

@ Carbon Black - the international takes all bar one corner of the National circuit and adds an additional 6 bends with (in an M5) I'd estimate a 110mph to 35mph stop. I don't think it'll be any easier on brakes and tyres!

I be there all going well, October is fine for me. I would prefer the National course again. Having been around it a few times I like to see where I can do better and get better exit speed from corners.

Posted By: T.J.
Date Posted: 24-August-2004 at 09:13

@ Ian - the international course takes in all the national corners except one (2nd last corner - the one before Dunlop). Granted if you are personally timing your lap times then you won't get a quantifiable idea of improvement, but in terms of fine-tuning lines on the national section you will practice nearly all bends, with some new ones to boot!

Assuming those who said they were going, do, then we have 16 definites which is fairly good going - an indication that numbers will be made. However, we do need some money to pay for it and a deposit is needed. So if you are still interested in participating then the office is ready to take payments of €100 per driver. We do need to get as many people committed asap though just in case! The application form is linked below.

Come on folks. Very few of you have paid the office.
Keeping within tradition, if the office fear that not enough numbers are going to participate then they will ask us to cancel it. I don't want to do this. Application forms are online at http://bmwcarclubireland.com/trackday_application_oct_2004.pdf - http://bmwcarclubireland.com/trackday_application_oct_2004.p df but you can also just ring the office directly and use your plastic friend.

Furthermore, I am going to book the International. This is going to cost more but I hoping that some sponsorship will cover it all. Will keep you informed.

She only has the standard stuff on her, "comfort" shocks, standard brakes etc. I don't mind paying a fee to get into the paddock and mabey get a spin or two! Or do I have to take full part?

It is free to come and watch. €30 to sit in a car or the full monty to drive.
The type of car is irrelevant. You car not going out to complete your own version of the DTM. You are going out to drive at your own speed and comfort. It is all about learning how to handle your car!

Keith

Don't be put off by the car you have.  I dropped in for a while as a spectator at the last one in April and really enjoyed it.  This time I'm taking the (bog standard, 14" wheeled) e30 325i auto along.  Not looking to set lap records with it, leaving that to M brigade ().  Just want to learn a bit more about how it handles and what it can do in a controlled environment where I don't have to worry about camera's, bumper to bumper traffic, etc.

As well as that, its an opportunity to meet with other petrolheads in a friendly environment!

I think it very unlikely that I'll be attending @ this stage

Too many other commitments, & even if I do make it up, I haven't had a chance to get my new clutch / brake pads on so the 3 won't last the distance (brakes fade on moderate fast road work with existing pads).

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement, particularly on the international circuit.

Trying to free up the day to make it as I missed the last one.  Whats the story with a crack in the windscreen as technically I guess thats unroadworthy as per the NCT.  Needs new rears but that can wait untill after the fact - hopefully it'll be dry

I don't trust the NCT too much. Where in the windscreen is the crack? Is it a crack or a chip? Your insurance may replace it free and without losing your NCB!

Killian - sorted called AXA to see if I had windscreen cover and I do so new screen on Friday.  Doesn't have any bearing on on my No claims so good to get something back from them although AXA are somewhat reasonable to begin with anyway.

I'm sure you are all aware of this site but if you have a high speed connection some of the BMW action on this site is impressive http://www.8200rpm.com - www.8200rpm.com   look for BMW stuff and also driftdays if you're interested.  Can only imagine the tyre bills.

Might take a few track days to get to that level.................

I have a pair of 215/55/16's and a pair of 225/55/16's, part worn, if they are of use to anyone for the day.  Free to a good home.  Held on to them after replacing the tyres on the 523 a few weeks back (don't ask why there was a pair of 215's!).  There's probably about legal minimum tread left on them and I won't be looking for them back!  I'll probably be in Dublin this weekend also and could bring them along for you folks that don't feel comfortable west of the Mad Cow.

I have sent off letters to everyone in the Irish region*. I am also awaiting confirmation about sponsorship, so everyone keep your fingers crossed.

However, we really need to get names asap, so get onto the office. Furthermore, Gerry has asked me to let people know that she takes credit card bookings in sterling (as that is all she can use in london!) and this may equate to slightly more than €100 depending on conversion rates, etc.

*about 5 people didn't get one but I know that they are aware of the event from posting here!

Got the letter this morning - thanks Killian.

Quick question though. Is the day likely to result in the need for a new set of tyres? I know it'll depend on driving style but as a rule of thumb what can be expected?

I'm really tempted but don't fancy a bill for €1,000 for 4 new tyres after tho.

I wouldn't recommend brand new tyres. Part worn are OK and nearly worn out is best (assuming it is dry). Reverse all that if it is wet.

Yes, still have them and you are welcome to them.  Where are you located?  Didn't get to Dublin at the weekend after all, but if you want to PM me I'm sure we could organize to meet somewhere in time for you to get them on to some wheels.

BTW, Killian, brother in law and M3 won't be able to make it, my sister has him "booked" to do some stuff for a charity doo that night.

A Kawasaki 750 & Honda 600 they are my mates who are both members of the car club

One of them drives a 840ci but it is missing alittle and he has been told to get a airflow and doesn't think he'll get it repaired in time

The other guy has 318is, if they had the other car fixed they would take them but the bikes were just an option.
