Hi guys, Washed my car for the first time for two weeks last night, and it took me longer to clean the front bumper than the wheels!! Does anyone know of a decent product out there that will assist in the removal of these pests? Cheers in advance Jim

Wire brush and elbow grease, failing that I use a bug & tar remover from Turtle Wax if it is really bad.
I was advised a while ago never to wax the front spoiler or the back of the mirrors cos the bugs get stuck in the wax, so I just use this P21s paint cleanser on those bits once in a while. It really cleans the surface making it feel like glass so it is harder for bugs to stick. Kevin |

Best/Cheapest solution I have found is to dilute a good quality car shampoo 50/50 with water and spray that on to the worst areas and allow it to soak in for a while, the flies then just wash off

On the subject of cleaning, Steveg used some wheel wax to remove tar spots and you are suggesting bug & tar remover (not for wheels but anyway) what is the best stuff to use on wheels that are covered in the lovely black dots left from brake dust (that have been left for quite a while...)?

Use a good quality Spray on wheel cleaner very sparingly as they are very acidic (Meguairs Hot wheels is one of the better ones) And don't let the brake dust bake on in the future

Halfords do there own brand of bug and tar remover which works quite well at cleaning off all sorts of stubborn marks. Also seems to clean up alloy wheels of long term brake dust staining - I have only tried it on good quality original BMW laquered wheels. ------------- E30 M3 Project - Specification TBC |

I think I'll also change back to Mintex pads as the Ferrodos are a nightmare, one good drive and the wheels are caked! Phil |

| Autoglym Motorcycle Cleaner is very good for both brake dust, and for flies on paintwork. Comes in a white spray bottle with pink writing and its not nearly as scary as the wheel cleaning acids, etc. Used to work a treat on my Suzuki Bandit, when the bugs get squashed into all the little nooks. spray on, gentle scrub if the are really bad, otherwise just hose off. Great sutff. |

I use Wonderwheels on my alloys, and I really cannot fault it. For dust that has been left for a while, it may take a couple of applications but it always seems to come off.

Autoglym Motorcycle Cleaner and Autoglym Clean Machine - these are the same products and are great for removing flies. I polish my motor with zymol cleanser wax, then field glaze, and even baked on flies drop off after a few second with the hose. wonder wheels is really good, not just alloys but tailpipes too (just mke sure they are stainless NOT chrome!) but on the allys its best to seal them with wax after. -------------

I too use Wonderwheels for getting rid of brake dust, have done for many years after trying other stuff.
Some will claim it is harsh but I have never found it to be. I wouldn't get it in an open cut though! Kevin |

Its when they are baked on that they are a real pain. I used to get the fekkers off my motorbike screen using a towel that I had soaked, wrung-out, then microwaved [truly!] to get it steming hot. Sort of like those things you get after a biriani and before the kulfi arrives, only full size. For removing flies I use a product called Amberclens, made by Ambersil, it's a foaming aerosol cleaner used for computer cleaning I think... Spray it on the screen or the paintwork, it foams up, leave about a minute then just wipe it off bugs and all... easy. lots of companies use it (maybe yours does too..) but I don't know where you can buy the odd can. Wax, wax, and more wax. Wax will polish the b**** off, and then prevent them from sticking. If you have the time, apply wax every 2 weeks, and by the end of the summer they will drop off before you have unwound the hose ! ------------- Tony.

Getting them off...I use Zaino (I am the UK distributor...) Getting them on - this is a friend's 911, after a top speed run in Germany. 172mph on speedo, 164mph on GPS.

I use the local multi story car park!! in fact i'm going today, £12 well spent for inside/outside/wheels/windows/dash/doors/plastics/carpets and i really couldn't do a better job myself!! (for £25 they'll even polish it!) -------------

Water with lemon juice and/or white vinegar on a 50/50 mix. This will bring the glass up a treat and will also help with plastic/kevlar bodywork too. I have a special sponge that has a cotton webbing sawn around it. you can buy them from halfords and to be honest its the best bloody thing ive ever purchased to clean cars does not scratch the paint and it gets all flies off the car no problems. I have tried tar/bug remover and wonderwheels and i find the sponge better. cheers leigh 96 M3 Evo coupe |
