Subject: Alloys and end bumper bit

I have just succumbed to a shark nose, 1981 vintage. The cross-spoke alloys are a bit tired, I was wondering if I should have them reconditioned or just get some knock-offs, and if so, where I might get them done or bought, as the case might be?

Also, the driver's side plastic end bit of the rear bumper is missing -- does anyone know a part number and/or where I might find one?

Thanks in advance!

What are the last 7 digits of your VIN no?

The rest of the car doesn't seem too bad, it was rebuilt about 5 or 6 years ago, and seemed to be in good nick...

I couldn't see any signs of the dreaded front wing rust, but I didn't have the bumper off....

Right, the part numbers you need are:

Nearside: 51 11 1 866 409
Offside: 51 11 1 866 410

On Monday morning, give Andy Howlett at Motormec a call: (01502) 500590. Tell him you-know-who sent you...

Thanks, I hope so too. I am a lazy bugger though, so I made sure I bought one that didn't start out needing major work before I bought it. I hope it stays that way!

...and if you PM me your contact details, I'll send you your very own parts reference CD-ROM. Once installed on your PC (works on XP, no problem), just key in the last 7 digits of your chassis number whenever you need parts.

You'll never know how you managed without it....

BTW, the fact that you'll also be able to look up part numbers for every BMW built up until July 2001 is but a bonus...

Does anyone have details of what sort of alloys I could fit? Are there any restrictions on the size, recommended sizes, makes, shapes, etc?

Oh dear, you've posted that twice.

Well, if you want to refurbish your cross-spokes, then do so. I don't like 'em 'cos they're a pain to keep clean....

Difficult to keep clean ... lazy me ... hmmm... tough call.

Which alloys are easy to keep clean, then?

If you're prepared to shell out for them, then these are quite practical:

otherwise these:

(but don't forget to buy hubcentric adaptor rings if you're using these alloys, as they were designed for the E39 Five, which has 74.1mm hubs rather than 72.5mm)

or these:

will also show off a Six remarkably well....

Basically you can fit any e32, E34, E31, E39 and E24 wheel on the six. You don't want to go any bigger than 17" wheels and no wider than 8.5 at the front and 9.5 at the rear. The best tyre wheel combination is 16" wheels with some 225/55/16 tyres. As your new purchase is an early E12 model i would recomend going with a more classic smaller wheel and tyre combination. If you have the Mahl wheels i would get these refurbished and get the rims polished as this will look great.

Not sure how easy they re to fit, but personally I think 17 or 18inch parallels give the 6 series a stunning look...

Those are M5 Alloys, aren't they? Must have cost a bomb...

Would they fit an E12 635 though?

Offset should be similar, "spokey".

Yes, these are "System II" alloys, popularly termed "throwing stars". Originally meant for E34 M5s. And, no, they didn't cost a bomb, thanks to an acquaintance of mine who wanted to offload them quickly in favour of split-rim BBS cross-spokes...

...but I will have to get tyres for them...

Are they the 9 inch rears? Seen them on a US spec. highline and they looked great.

I've got these fitted on my everyday E34 and currently run Eagle F1s but much preferred the previous Toyo Proxes which were fantastic. I found out that they came off an 840CSi which is a slightly different offset to the M5 but they seem fine with even tyre wear and no rubbing as the rear arhes had already been rolled.

There is an red M6 for sale at a garage in Bristol for £12995 with 10x18 rears (Rondells by the look of them) nice wheels but they look too big on a 6 IMO.

8-inch all round, but the spare fifth alloy is 9-inches wide, so will have to swap or part-exchange this for another 8-inch...

This is what they should look like when fitted:

Not sure whether E38 Seven has slightly larger hub. You may need the famous hubcentric rings.

You must be joking.

I'm looking forward to not having to spend half of my weekends trying to do bodily contortions in removing the brake dust...

I may be prepared to listen to sensible offers for 4 8.5 x 17 Hartge 11 spokes with 245x40x17 Toyo Proxes Type S.  with bolts and hubcentric adapters if anyone is interested.  Tyres and wheels are as new <1000 miles.

I like the BMW Style 32 wheels which are similar to Alpinas but easier to keep clean & reasonably available.

Mine are 8x17" & 9x17" with 235/40 & 255/40 Goodyear F1's. Size is almost identical to the TRX's. Fit with no clearance problems using plastic hubcentric rings which are so thin you wouldn't think they'd make a difference.

I've been using Mer's Wicked Wheel Wax from Halfords which really does make the brake dust easier to get off.
