| For the past few weeks i'v noticed a worrying type of rattle on start up which seems to be coming from the top of the engine, but it only happens once the car has been warmed up and then left to stand for a several minutes. The rattle lasts from 3-8 seconds then goes away completely. Has anyone come across anything like this before? Any advice would be much appriciated. The car is a '97' and has covered 80000 miles. |

| where about is the 2ndry air pump situated, is there a way of getting this checked? As for the vanos it was the first thing I thought of but as the engine runs fine after start up and ther is no power loss I'm hoping it could be something else. |

A dealer can diagnose it quick enough. Mine does it-engine warms up and just as it is warming up and choke kicks off the 2ndry air pump kicks in for between 30 and 60 secs. sounds like it could be the same problem. A tap on the accelerator sorts out my problem straight away. I'll have to run it down to local dealer see what they say. Only problem is i'll probably get there and the rattle won't happen (Just my luck). |

One check you can do to see if its the VANOS is to rev the engine to just over 3000rpm then listen to the engine, if it makes a rattling noise as the revs die down then it could be the VANOS. Hopefully not. Regards Mark. ------------- Love driving my E36 EVO  Tickety Boo

These are the exact symptoms that my 98 Evo had. It sounds like vanos I'm affraid to say. It only happens when the engine/oil is warm because the oil is much thinner. It is basically the vanos unit geaboxes as they fight to hold the cams in position. You may also find that as well as the vanos gearboxes needing replacing that the oil accumulator that feeds the vanos units may need replacing. Expect a bill of around £2000 from a franchised dealer if you haven't got a warranty. You will also find a delcine in mid range performance if it is the above. Good luck. ------------- RH |

Theres no rattling on the engine as the revs die down and there's no decline in engine performance at the moment. If it is the vanos will the noise get worse so it will be easier to identify? |

Pop the bonnet and check the underside of the vanos to see if oil is leaking out of it.
Start the car up and get someone to rev to 300rpm then let the revs die off, as they do listen for a 'marbles in a tin' type rattling from the vanos unit.
