What side impace protection exists

Hello all, can anyone advise what side impact protection there would be in a 1988 535i (or any 5 series for that matter).  Do they come with door bars at this age?

Hi, can no-one confirm whether the E34 5 Series has any side impact protection in the doors?

My 87, 740 Volvo does, as they did from the early '80's.

If no-one can answer this, does anyone know when door bars were introduced to the 5 series?

Surely any-one interested in going faster must also be interested in their own safety ??
