1990 318i M40:

I seem to have a leaking sump pan - question; is it a simple job to replace the gasket? My Haynes tells me I need to unbolt the engine mounts and partially lift out the engine. Please, anyone who knows better, tell me this is not the case!

not sure bout the m40 engine but i no the m20 engine has to have the mounts of at the bottom and lifted up not that hard really if u have a pully block or something else to lift the engine, have had to do this more times than enough,

Have you tried simply tightening up the sump bolts? This has worked on two of my previous cars. They seem to work loose over time, or maybe the gasket just gets compressed.

Yes, I have found tightening bolts helps too on my M42.

Removed the lower sump and found two bolts from the upper section lying in the bottom of the sump! Replaced these and tightened up  the rest, a few had worked loose.  All seems well now, no signs of escaping oil - thanks for the advice
