Basically buying advice is very similar to any other six. Look for rust in wings, jacking points and floor pan. The car should have all documents and fsh. They need timing chains done at around the 100k mile mark and this is a £1200-£2000 job. There are basically two looks of M6 that you can have either a chrome bumper of a highline bumper version. I would recomend a chrome bumper as i prefere the look and they are 200KG lighter making them considerable quicker. But that is a matter of personel taste. The brakes on them are uprated from a standard six, but the six is a heavy car and do suffer from brake fade. The car should have a firm ride and should be 20mm lower than a standard six. They were all Manual gear boxes and are basically are overdrive units. The throw is long, but should have no slack if so the linkage is shot, but this is inexspensive to fix. The suspension is uprated with Bilsteins all round and harder bushes. No component is to exspensive, but they will probable need doing so have a look at the history file and see what has been done. Headlamp wash wipes never work so if you find one that does you are very lucky. Exhaust are very exspensive, but Stanless steels are available. The worst thing about the sixes are the metric tyres. They don't grip well, are very noisey and cost £250 per corner. If the car needs tyres you want to get some standard wheels in 16 or 17"'s. However most sixes owners have changed the wheels. I would however recomend keeping them as people like them for originality. Basically if you want to get a good m635 you want to pay proper money for one that has had lots of money spent on it. I know they are exspensive, but Munich Legends have some excellent sixes and would be a good point of reference.
Hope this is usefull,
James
P.S. Any more questions fire away

TotalBMW Mag had a very good buying guide in one of the last issues. Have to dig it out.The only thing I remember was to look for rust in the inner wings as this can be a bit pricey to replace. I am sure someone will shed some more light on this subject. BTW I am a big fan of the sharknose! I am always waiting for this weak moment to buy one........

Be very carefull. If it needs wings they are £350-500 each depending on whether you go pattern part or BMW so that is at least a £1000 job. Other bodywork bits all add up. Look for rust around the rear axcle and have a good poke at the floor. If it rusts here a full bore burn out can rip the back end off the car. The M635 engine is very strong, but only when it's been looked after properly. A neglected engine could spell big bills. If it's been stood for eight months there is a high chance that one of the front calipers has ceased and these car not cheap to fix, although id it needs a reseal thats a cheaper job.
A good six thats had a lot of money spent on it will need work doing to it on an ongoing bases. A neglected six will have 10x as much work needed. What you have to weigh up is ok it cost £2000, but will it cost me £6000 to have it in good condition. You now have a car that owes you 8k. You could probable buy an M6 close to concourse for that although the best ones seem to be creeping up to 12k. One other thing to consider. If the car is very ropey, the engine alone is worth about £1500 and in parts it will be worth a lot. It might make a very good M6 donar car.

Ah, it's an '84. Might be one of the first RHD ones, then. If you'd said "1986, in Alpine white, being sold by someone in the North-East", I'd have asked whether the registration no. was "KIW 5921" because that's the one I viewed some years ago. The mechanicals were fantastic, but the body condition was NOT something to write home about....

Thanks for all the advice the car wasn't as bad as i thought and i bought it, one prob though is when the car is cold it runs great but after a couple of miles when it's warmed up it starts misfiring badly it does clear for a few seconds now and again but misses for most of the time when warm.
It feels like its only firing on 4/5 cylinders and when it clears its back to full 6,
can anyone shed some light on my prob.
Thanks..

I had a poor running from warm problem and it turned out to be a faulty crank sensor, but it could be a crack in the air intake. The thing with that 24V engine is it's highly tuned and complicated. It probable needs a good tune, but that will certainly cost a bit. I would go and seek out a local specialist. Where are you based? As it's important you see someone tht knows what you are doing.
If you need any further help send us a private mesage.
