I have booked a room now and there are still rooms free.
The family is running another hotel nearby so other rooms are available. I have forwarded the address to Markus and Daniel, so it would be nice if we can stay in one Hotel all together.

I'm hopefully travelling over with M3Cecotto, but not sure what day. Would prefer to travel over on the Friday. Is a group going over? I may stay at my parents on the Thursday night which is near Bedford.

I would like to travel over early ( probably 7 am ferry ) Friday from Dover . Remember the Ring is open on the Friday from 2:15 pm until 7:30 pm, and being a week day should mean it will be little less packed than the saturday and the Sunday.

Brian, 7am!!!!!! in the middle of the night????
I am planning to hop on the ferry about 10am.
Which route/ticket are you going for?

What can I say Uwe .... I'm keen
Dover is 45 mins from me,so maybe I'll keep it cheap by taking the ferry as the Seacat crossing last time almost had me reaching for the sick bags
So call it a 7 am ferry with 1.5 hours for the crossing and another 30 mins to get off and out of the dock area . Then add another hour for the time difference and its already 10am . Another 4-5 hours to get the the Ring, book into the hotel , freshen up and that should leave a few hours of lapping on what hopefully should be a quiet Friday evening.
I normally go the route as suggested by Ben Lovejoys Ring page
http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/directions/calais/index.html - here I did go via Spa last time just to have a look and because I thought part of it was still open as public road . Sadly there was some racing on , so no joy there.

I'm planning to go over early Friday, having driven down on the Thursday and stayed locally to Dover on the Thursday night - a leisurely jaunt to the Ring for Friday evening - I'm not too bothered about getting any track time on Friday, but it'd be a bonus.  Prefer the bog standard "big boat" to the Seacat or chunnel.  Planning to stay on Sunday and head home on Monday morning.

I am flexible and it would probably be  better to go over in a group if possible.

I'm gonna head over Friday morning from Cambridgeshire. Will meet up with people heading friday am as the boats can be boring. It would be a plus if someone has been before and has some idea of the roads.

It'll be great to be on the correct side of the road, like Le Mans last year.

26th and 27th of June at the Nurburgring.
When coming back thru customs , please please don't mention that you have been abroad to collect LSD's or you may hear the crack of some rubber gloves

I am happy to guide if we meet up somewhere in Dover.
What is the prefered ferry of everyone? I am using the boat outwards and tunnel back to save some cost. Or the other way round, haven't booked anything yet. Don't go fo a "regular" ticket. I had a quick browse yesterday and have been quoted £245!

I thought the trick was to buy 2 same day return tickets one booked for the day you go out and one for the day you come back and not use one half of each ticket as a same day return is a 1/4 of the price of just booking to go Friday and come back Sunday or Monday. If there is 4 of us all going at the same time we may be able to get a discount for a group booking . Look here http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/ferrydeals.html - ferry links

Brian,
when have you last used this trick? I always switch operators as a safety measure because Hoverspeed might not let you on the ferry if you haven't left with this ticket used for the return trip.

I am going and will meet up. I thought the chunnel was £50 eash way when booked in advance. Will need to check up on this.

Not to bothered what time we leave at but not too early.

Uwe/Brian

Just tried the Chunnel website and leaving 10 am on Friday 25 and returning sunday 27 4pm(just put a time in for quote) was £153. Quicker by far than the ferry. That was for one person, but think it goes on your vehicle anyway.

We obviously need to make a decision as to what the best form of crossing that suits everyone.

I prefer the chunnel as it's far quicker and trains leave fairly regularly.

I would still like to leave early to get to the Ring in time for some laps on what would be a quiet day. A fully open weekend will be very busy and for a first time vistor a Friday evening would be an ideal time to drive the Ring .Also I think I will travel back on the Monday, maybe driving to Spa on the way back as it is hardly going out of the way.

Posted By: m3Cecotto
Date Posted: 16-February-2004 at 14:46

I prefer the boat but it's no big deal, early as is practical on the Friday would be best.

A trip home via Spa on the Monday sounds good.

We need to be careful that everyone gets to do what they want to do, it is meant to be a holiday after all.  It'll be 20 years almost to the day that I last drove the Nordschleif so a couple of gentle laps on the Friday might be good.

I've been in contact with the guesthouse Uwe mentions above and I'm waiting on confirmation of two rooms.

Posted By: 215m3
Date Posted: 16-February-2004 at 19:22
I also booked a reservation at the same one as well and am awaiting confirmation.

My preference would be to travel back late on the Sunday as i would like to be home on Monday. Not to bothered to see spa, but may travel down reasonably early on Friday if that's what everyone else decides on. Cambridgeshire to dover are is not to far. Te ferry is about 2hrs including disembarking, the chunnel is so quick at only 25 minutes underground. Save time here to get to ring in time Brian.

I've just registered on this forum after being sent here from the S14net asking questions about the trip.

Ok, bear with me:

weekend 26th 26th June

UK guys hoping to get Friday morning ferry from Dover

Accommodation choices?

I'm definately up for it - I just have to check my Hillclimb/sprint championship rules as there is a sprint meeting that weekend, and I might have to attend the meet to stay in the championship.

How many guys are in Scotland? I haven't looked into this yet, but isn't there an overnight ferry from Rosyth?

Cheers

Steve

Welcome

I live near Bathgate and am travelling down on thursday to travel over on the friday. M3 Cecotto lives up here and we are yet to make any real decisions.

There is a meet on the 6 March at Rockingham which i'm going down to and back in the one day if, you want to drive down as well. See the E30 forum or E30 zone forum for more details.

Ley me know or send me a PM

Hi Steve, I'm in the Glasgow area.

For Rockingham, myself and 215M3 are planning to meet up just south of J16 on the M6 on the Sat morning and drive back north on the Sat evening.

For Nurburgring, the general plan is down to near Dover on the Thursday and over earlyish on Friday, I think.

Not made any definate plans yet. Uwe was looking at a few options and will get back with further info. Teflon may be travelling down as well. I'm travelling down Thursday and stay at my folks in Cambridgeshire. M3Cecotto is also travelling down on the Thursday and stay somewhere near Dover. Maybe all three of you could sort some accommo once definate plans have been decided on how we cross the channel.

Posted By: UweM3
Date Posted: 07-March-2004 at 18:17
Toby, I have spoken to Brian and came to the conclusion that it makes the most sense to cross over the way he mentioned. So we provisional agreed to take the tunnel latest 8am Friday morning. This will give us the opportunity to have a few laps Friday afternoon before it gets to busy at the weekend. I have booked the whole following week off so will possibly not return with you folks Sunday. It would be nice if we go all togehter but can understand that it might be a bit to early for some of you.

I'll still keen to get there at a good time on Friday in order to do a few laps when the track should be quiet , but I appreciate that being at the tunnel to get an 8 am train is not for everyone , especially those who've already got a long journey just to get there . So lets say an 8 am train . By the time you get off the train in Calais and get out of the out of the holding area ,it's going to be nearly 9am . Add another hour for the time difference and it's now 10 am , then 4.5 - 5 hours driving time to the Ring and it's now 3 pm .Add another hour to dump all the bags at the hotel and freshen up a little and that should leave 3 hours of quiet track time .

Brian & Uwe

That's fine with me. I'm gonna stay at my folks and drive down Thursday morning. 8am at the chunnel is fine with me. When i went to Le Mans last year was at the chunnel about the same time.

Boyd (M3cecotto) was going to travel down on Thursday as well, but can't say if this is to early for him. For Graham (teflon) and Steve need to see if they are definately going as they have not booked accommo yet.

I'm gonna travel back sunday afternoonish, so to be home on Monday. PM me when you go to book.

The 8am chunnel on Friday morning sounds good. I'll probably travel down on the Thursday from Aberdeen and overnight somewhere near for the Chunnel (or maybe with one of my brotherz in Brentwood/Colchester)

I've emailed the Haus Marvin guesthouse and am waiting for a reply.

Ur more than welcome to tag along.

Last i heard about 60 M3's though we'll never know till we get there. Suppose it's just a big meet with a large track to travel round.

If your serious about driving on the ring just get your car checked over to make sure everything works by someone who knows about the car or your normal mechanic.

So then that could be 7 of us then.

rcwtom, have some tape with you to cover the front lights. DO NOT buy the stickers offered by the ferry/tunnel people. Seems like a real bargain to me. £10 for a set of plastic stickers! When I first moved to the UK I used some plaster out of my first aid kit. It lastet for 6 month!

As for lights, why not just turn the setting back to RH driving position? It's just three screws (but mind you it means dismantling the headlights I think - I'll have a look).

We are all going to travel out together. We may all come back at different times. I suppose if we all book our own tickets, but just all book for 8am chunnel out. I know with the chunnel the ticket has times but are fairly opened for the date of the return.

Alternatively we could get everyones email address and ddiscuss it off the forum.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what this trip costs in total?
You know, ferry, room, fuel etc etc.

Its the first time I've read about it and would be interested, funds permitting. I missed Rockingham as I had only just picked up my M3 and the sight of all those M3's would be a beautiful thing!

You'll need to be quick to book a room for somewhere local .The Ring is open all weekend , and being summer means it will be very busy .

I don't know if you mean me, but I am coming. I'll go ahead now and book the 0758 train on the Friday.

I'm sure we can all meet up somewhere close by before joining the queue for the train.

Try this place for accomodation - that's where I am staying and just a few doors down from Haus Marvin:

OK, It's me, I'm the one travelling with Jake, even though I'm called Alan and I'm from England - Funny how these things get lost in the telling! I've been having a laugh with Jake about this post today on the phone, for those of you who don't know Jake, well, all will be revealed when we meet at the tunnel.

I'm just waiting for Jake to 100% confirm the details, neither of us have been over to the Ring before so we'll be looking for pointers off you more experienced travellers.

Opps , sorry Alan. I must have been thinking of someone else when I went to type your name. Although Jake did say you were from Scotland .

As for pointers , all I can see is read Ben Lovejoys Nurburgring site at www.nurburgring.org.uk If you have any more questions after that , then just ask .

Will meet you all there, would have liked to join in the convoy on the way over as running together would be fun. However, my car is now based at the Ring, so I'll think of you lot droning through boring Belgium whilst I fly serenly overhead.

Keep meaning to do this . Looking at the Euro Tunnel site , a booking for friday to Monday is something like £185 . Book to go Friday morning and come back Friday night is about £35 . What a huge rip-off !

So I thought about booking a day return on the Euro Tunnel for the trip and and not bothering with the reurn half , and then booking a day return for the ferry starting at Calais . The web sites will quote you to do this , I just don't know if they send the tickets to you , or you collect when booking in . If you have to give an address for them to post them , I don't see them sending them to me in the UK when I've just told them I'm coming from Calais .

Brian

It quoted £144, which i thought was ok then when i went further jumped up to £187, like what's the jump for?

If you booked online you should get a ref no. and would have thought that would be enough?

just booked Friday 25th 7.58am
Hopefully nobody at check in will get suspicious when we all go for a "day trip". So please do NOT mention that Germany is our destination
Usually I come back with Seafrance on another "day trip".

Do you book the return tickets in advance Uwe , do they post them to you or ask questions about why you live in the UK but will travel from calais to Dover ?

As I am not going back sunday I will just go to a travel agent in Germany and book a trip. Online booking should just give you a ref number, no tickets anymore. Just don't use the tunnel again

Just booked the train, £123.00. Not to bad.

Out on Friday 08.00 25th return Sunday 27th.

How about all meeting at Thurrock services JNC 30 M25 to travel down to the tunnel togather as a possible meeting point.

Ok , booked a day return for the 0758 today at £38. Getting a day return from Calais back home is tricky . The ferry companies are wise to people from the UK trying to book like this , and won't let you book from the websites . There's an easy £100 saving somewhere here ....... just got to find it

You can buy a ticket there and then once in Calais , thing is it costs about £160 for a single.......This is how mad ferry pricing is .

I agree Uwe. Everyone will have an early start to be at the Chunnel for 0728 . Why waste time getting to a meeting point and waiting ? If everyone just makes sure they are at the Chunnel on time ...... no problems.

You can't do a full flying lap of the Ring on a public day ,as you start half way down the main straight and end about 400 yards from where you joined the track.

Most guys on public days time their laps from a bridge just after the start and end it at a gantry just before the end . These are called BTG ( bridge to gantry )times .

If someone tells you a BTG time , then reckon on adding about another 25 secs for a full lap time. I don't know many times for E30 M3s , but I have seen a guy called Espen in a video do about 8:30 BTG which is quick .

I would say everything below 9 mins is a change pants job. Espen is really flying!
