The third brake light bulb in my E39 525i has blown and I'm getting the annoying chime every time I start the car. Now, normally this is an easy enough fix; remove the plastic cover, remove the bulb, etc. However, my sat nav DVD sits slap bang in the centre of the boot mouth, right under the access hole for the brake light bulb. Yeah you will need to remove the unit as there is a hatch to change the bulb under the light unit in the boot. My E39 had a space for the CD unit as Robin says in the left hand side. Strange position on yours. I don't imagine that it will be held in with very many screws to take out. A man of your ability can manage that  Don't moan but what does the handbook say? Yellow hi viz? No handbook. Everything removable, including the sat nav dvd were removed when it was imported from Japanland. The high viz was indeed a memory from a French trip (pic taken a while back). It's factory fitted according to the spec sheet.
