But atleast they are finally admitting that diesels aren't the answer for everything.

I know that a 6cyl will always have some efficiency disadvantages compared to a similar powered 4cyl because of friction, etc. but I can't understand why BMW don't focus some attention on smaller 6cyl's for cars like the current 528i/328i rather than 4 cyl's. Using much the same technologies as they are on the 4 cyl's they should be able to make, say, a 2.0 straight six with a couple of turbo's, ED technology, maybe even some hybrid assistance, etc. and get efficiency that comes close to the 4 cyl's but retains the USP of the straight six. The silky smooth engine, manual transmission, RWD and the handling benefits of these combined are why I buy BMW's. In a couple of years time when the cars I'm buying are in the 2009+ range its going to be hard to get a 6 cyl (petrol or diesel), manual transmission will have all but disappeared and BMW are talking about FWD.
If Jaguar made a manual transmission XF I'd probably be looking there for a car to meet my future needs (or a CX-16  ). I'm kind of afraid to think about it too much but Lexus might be the only player in that field (Audi might be there too but for the fact that they can't get a car to drive over a bump with any composure and they can't do a largish petrol engine to belch out less emissions than a coal fired power station - big disadvantages in the tax regime and on the fine rural roads of Ireland!).------------- Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93. With you on your thougths. BMWs are 6 cylinder petrol engines, end of discussion.
Why would you not consider an auto? Even though I've been driving autos for 12 years I would not discount a manual if it was the right car i.e. a 550i with all the toys.
