Hello chaps, I meant to write this up last October, but better late than never !

Right, DME 42 (main ecu) faliure, on an EWS 3 security car (later than 2000).

The EU handed car companies a "keep it to themselves" charter with the introduction of EWS 3, which was meant as an enhanced security measure on very expensive cars, this turns into a nightmare when the car gets older, is worth very little, and BMW want £1,300.08 for a new DME, then a charge to fit it, then a charge to program it ...... bless them !

Autologic software cannot cope with programming a 2nd hand DME to your car, there is supposedly some easter european software than can, it costs thousands, and is a sh*t or bust measure, it'll either work, or fry the dme ....... I'm advised.

Check your car is EWS 3, by removing the small recess panel by the drivers right knee, the white security module will quite simply have EWS 3 on it if it is, it also has a Rover part number.

Having made sure your car is EWS 3, you need a "thief kit" from a scrapyard.

You need to find an identical car to yours, same engine, same gearbox, there are plenty of BMW specialist scrapyards around, I used these :

http://www.fabdirect.com/?id" rel="nofollow - http://www.fabdirect.com/?id

You need the DME, the security module, the halo from around the ignition barrel, and at least one key from the donor car.

Disconnect the battery, replace the DME, security module, and Halo.

Reconnect the battery.

Carefully tap around your key with a stanley knife blade and a small hammer, you are only looking at breaking the glue seal, (do yours first so you get a feel for it, as the transponder part of your key is now scrap)

Do the same to the donor key, superglue the transponder part of the donor key onto the base of your key.

Your car should now work as it did before your DME faliure, it is as simple as that, I'd suggest you get the fault memory of your 2nd hand DME cleared by a local specialist with the autologic software, as you wont know what is stored in there from the donor car ........ the donor car has been scrapped, and may have had all sorts of issues.

The "thief kit" cost me £150.00

Keep the reciept from the scrapyard, as your car now has an electronic identity that doesn't match its vin number.

As a final excerise, if you're as vindictive as me, recontact BMW customer service, who you had contacted a few days earlier for assistance in resolving the issue at a reasonable cost that wasn't more than the car was worth, only to be told that is the cost of owning a BMW, and if you can't afford the "running costs", you can't afford to own that marque , and tell them smugly how you've defeated their beloved EWS 3 security system.

Should you purchase a new module from them ...... for £1,300.08, they insist on keeping your old unit, to remove it from the 2nd hand market ....... bless them !

Best Wishes

Good to know Smile  I think it should be possible to use BMW Scanner 1.40 to code a 2nd hand module.
