Hi, when we were on the superb outing to the SRC Nero mentioned there was an old thread on snow tyres...so apologies for going over old ground. Either could someone send me the old thread or could someone help...

I have an E92 M3 and I live on a farm. When the snow comes I will definitely be house bound unless I get some snow tyres. I was thinking of getting some 18" wheels and putting snow tyres on them and then just swapping them on as and when the weather dictated it.

Where do I get the wheels and snow tyres that will fit and do the job at a reasonable price?

I do a lot of miles by the way

Thanks in advance. Nicola

If your M3 is still under any form of BMW warranty, you might want to think about going to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=WD92&mospid=50361&hg=36&fg=95 - BMW for a set of winter tyres and rims.  That way you know you will get the correct size of tyres for the correct size of rims so that the rolling radii of the wheels is not altered.

If you change the rolling radii of the wheels, (esp with something like a M3) the car then throws ted and the blanket out of the pram as it gets confused over the number of wheel revelotions for a given rotational speed of the engine/transmission combination.

You prolly don't need snow tyres. Winter tyres will be just fine in Scotland. I use Toyo SnoProx in the BMW recommended size. They're amazing. Passing 4x4s no probs in the snow. And Mercs, other BMWs and Lotuses.

Steve Gill used (uses?) Vredestein Wintracs. And there are plenty of other options out there. Get some.

I didn't have any issues with my 275 x 35 tyres on 18" rims last winter.  Minus 13 deg C with 6 inches of snow, no hassles with ordinary tyres.  I was better off in the Beamer than the bus.

Just don't go anywhere beyond the cars capability and more importantly go anywhere beyond your own driving capabilities.  I did this last winter and didn't get stuck.

BMW does not have to stand for Badly Made (for) Winter.

What are the dimensions of your winter rims and tyres Duncan.
I'm just looking for a guideline as i start a search for some of my own and since yours are on an E36 and worked so well who better to ask.

TBH unless you're needing to cope with deeper snow I reckon standard wheel and standard tyre sizes would work well.

Top tip from driving the Zed3 all winter... turn of the

Good man, Bmw traction control is so poor its unbeliveable even pressing the button once to set to BMW factory setting off is also poor, Hold the button in for 10/15second depending on model and turn it right off

Another top tip for driving any bmw in any weather...

GET RID OF YOUR TRACTION CONTROL ITS USELESS!!!!!!

Mines has been now disconected and removed as there is no need for it atall, It makes the car shockingly bad to drive and removes all power from the wheels with any hint of spirited driving.. If you own M3 or 6cylinder bmw and cant handle the cars power without ACS on sell the car and buy a nissan micra Simples lololol

Hi,

BMW are recommending 235 x 40 x 18 for snow Tyres and M double
spoke M270 alloys in 18's.

I know the m3's run wider rear Tyres n wheels than fronts with
summer setup, however it seems that they are recommending same
width front n rear for winter setup. I wonder if they would therefore
advise 4 x front 18" wheels to suits the consistent 235 width Tyres
front to rear. I would like ur guys views before I go ahead.

Also can anyone pls confirm if 'M double spoke M270' are the STD
18" wheels from an e92 m3? If so I would seek some second hand
ones as they are purely for winter use and buy the Vredestein Wintracs
as they seem to get great write ups.

Any ideas other than eBay on where to find STD 18" e92 m3 alloys as
I'd like to get on with this.

Thanks!

M5 was fine except going up in to the garage.

Dude, where did you get those Toyos? Those sizes would go
on the Golf, ideal for where we live now. Really is the

Too right Paul.  I remember several moments last year with your E30 when it was sporting the 2.5l. I remember you trying to get moving in the pub car park and I could barely push let alone stand up as I was crying with laughter. I ended up pushing the car round side ways whilst you let the wheels slip so that we could face the car the other direction. I also remember a couple of roundabout going perfectly sideways whilst under complete control of the car. Good times

you always want the SMALLEST permitted tyre when going for winter tyres.

www.camskill.co.uk can supply winter tyres.
