Hello all.

I am new to the site, recently bought a 323i off my mate and I believe
the car use to belong to a member on here?

Anyway I have a question regarding the above wheels and if anyone
has had theirs refurbished and if so how sucessful was it?

Dave.

Thanks Issy :-)

I do have literally a couple just now but I'm on an iPhone just so a bit

Hi Pete

The name Ally rings a bell....it's silver anyway.

I did hear that new bolts would be required? Thinking about it, maybe a set of new wheels and fresh tyres is the way to go going by the cost of a refurb....

I have been hearing about corrosion problems with replica ACS 3s and LMs (which I have considered) Has anyone else experienced this?

As above - By the time you have paid for new studs and had them re-furbed you are £380. Then paying for the tyres to be re-fitted bank on another £40 quid for that.

New ones are £400 quid....my advice....buy new ones.

I had mine done with satin black centres which was the only reason i paid to get them done as you can only buy silver.

Welcome to the forum, you have bought a cracking car!

Other option is to polish the lips by hand which gives a really nice finish and just accept that the studs are not perfect - cost - £10!

Welcome, did you buy the car from scotty?

If so, that was my car before, take good care of it!!

It truely is a great car with lots of extras

Saw you pass at the weekend, think it was Sunday on West Tullos Road.

Wheels were on my to do list but scotty wanted to buy the car before I got the planned jobs done, I had bought paint & laquer for them & was going to paint them including the lip, I think they would still look good even without the polished lip.

The problem with the replicas is the plastic studs, otherwise I would have had them powder coated before.

Hi mate

A hand polish could take some time ha. Autosol and fine grade steel
wool would probably the best for that yeah?

Hi Ally

Yeah I bought it off Scotty but don't worry it's in good hands :-)

All the extras are nice touches and more importanly subtle and it is
very obvious the car has been looked after.

I was probably going to or from my folks house as they stay in Cove
and that's t where it goes to get cleaned on the weekends.

Spraying them is a good idea but I'm thinking for the price you are for
tyres on their own you're not that much more for a wheel / tyre
package as you'll know which seems to make more sense.

Hi Dave,

That's good news, I will look forward to seeing it still going around then!

The wheels & tyres were around £720 from Turrif tyres which was a very good deal at the time, as you will see they tyres are still in great nick so new wheels alone could be an option.

Have a look on http://www.bmautosport.co.uk/ - http://www.bmautosport.co.uk/  for really good deals on alloys, they have a wide choice & are good to deal with.

I would recommend Tredwise on shore lane to have the tyres fitted to your new wheels, assuming you go for the same size & width / type that is

I sold an immaculate P1 to my mate before I bought my flat and he
doesn't look after it like I did which is disappointing to say the least so
I understand what it's like.

I think the back tyres won't be far away from being replaced? I
checked out bmautosport and they have some nice wheels!

Cheers mate I will keep those guys in mind.

Hmm, the back tyres looked fine to me, they have only done about 15k miles or so

Not 100% sure, check on http://www.bmwowner.com/forum - www.bmwowner.com/forum  loads of folk on there have refurbed dishes on BBS splits with varying methods. Some have even kept the wheels on the car (ie back ones) car jacked up, set the wheels turning, whilst rubbing them back with whatever!

The polished lips would come up very good with not an awful lot of effort.

I had a wee 5 miniute go on one of them, & could see results even then, just with some polish & wet & dry, so half a day on each wheel would see real results, I was going to just paint the nuts which would have been the most tedious part

Ally

I had a go using the wet & dry paper at the weekend and that made a huge difference! So thanks for the advice.

Regarding the nuts, can these be removed from the wheel for painting?

The force required to remove them would no doubt distort the shape of them. They are splined plastic studs which are squeezed into +/- 7mm unprofiled round hole. I can show you mine if you want, i have a stud missing on one of the wheels at the moment so can show you exactly whats involved if you want.

I had mine done in satin black about 6 months ago.

Dave, as Neil says, I wouldn't try to remove them as they are splined & pressed in, & wouldn't come out without ruining them.

Glad you got on good with the wet & dry, you can see what I mean there then.

I was simply going to lay the wheel face up, you will see the stud actually has a small recess back from the face of the alloy, which would allow you to "pool" the paint in there, leaving a perfect finish.

Alternatively, if you are painting the spokes, paint the studs along with them anyway. Depends on what colour you want them.
