Yeah easy job. I did it twice on my E39.  I jacked it up and took all four wheels off in turn to get access.

You need a mate (to pump the brake pedal), an 11 mm open ended spanner to open the bleed screw, a brake bleed hose and a container to collect the old fluid in.

Use BMW brake fluid as it is the cheapest fluid you can buy that matches the correct specification for your car.

There will be threads on this if you search as I've commented on it several times before.

The brake fluid reservoir is under the drivers side pollen filter housing which unclips and lifts out.  Bleed the nearside rear wheel first as that is the furtherst point away from the reservoir.  You will see that the old fluid is really dark in colour compared to the new fluid.

Try and remove the old fluid out of the reservoir first to save you pumping it thru the system.  Make sure you keep the reservoir topped up as you will have to re-start if you get air into the system.

You will need a tool to re-set the service indicator on your dash.  A local garage can re-set this for you.

Or mibbie the newer (post facelift) E39s can be re-set using various combinations/positions of ignition key and trip counter reset button.  Mibbie someone else can confirm this?
