Hey Lads,

Been trying to track down the cause of a load screeching noise coming from the front of my engine. I replaced the viscous coupling, belt and upper and lower idler pulleys but the noise was still there and getting worse.  I've finally tracked it down to the Alternator pulley, thing is i've been told that this part is not available separately and i'll have to buy a complete alternator for 300+.

Before i hand over my hard earned, and recession hit money, does anyone here know where i could get a new alternator pulley part no. 12311247312 or alternatively a new/recon 70a alternator for a M43 engined 316.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

Why not try someone like Miles Balfe Starter Motor and Alternator repair centre. He is located near the Red Cow Inn assuming that he is still in business. Alternator repair specialists will have replacement pulleys for some of their service repair units. They have them for Bosch and Lucas made alternators as far as I know.

The alternator is:
BMW 12 31 1 247 287 (70A) superseded by 12 31 1 247 311 (70A)
Bosch 0 123 310 006 (new)
Bosch 0 986 039 220 (exchange)

The pulley is:
BMW 12 31 1 247 312
Bosch 1 126 601 011

Any BMW dealer or Bosch agent should be able to get the pulley...
Probably quicker to get it through BMW on a VOR

Kind Regards,
Eddie.

---UPDATE----

Was halfway throught taking the alternator off. Had the airbox, maf, top idler pulley off and about to remove the belt and i had a thought. I put everything back together but this time i used the old belt.  Started her up and low and behold the sound was gone. Left her running for 10 mins and gave it a few revs but no sound.  So looks as though the new belt was rubbing against something causing the noise.

Little embarrassing but not too much as the well known BMW specialists who fitted the new parts and who i brought the car back to when the sound appeared never copped it either.....;)

Well i hope thats it sorted and i'll get a new belt from BMW and chuck the spurious belt.

Thanks eveyone for your help, it was much appreciated.
