Subject: E39 master key arming the alarm

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this:

I bought a new Master key for my E39, 540i this week. When locking the
car the indicator lights flash, but the alarm tell tale does not blink.

I have tried to set off the alarm, but it is not sounding. If I try to pull on
the door handles with car locked; nothing happens. If I unlock the car
with the key in the door lock and then open the car the hazard lights
flash, but no alarm noise.

With the old key, which was worn out, if I managed to lock remotely and
unlocked with the key in the door the alarm sounded. This is not
happening now. It appears that the alarm is not arming when locked via
remote. The key was purchased and programed at the BMW dealership in
Bromley. Could it be that the key has not been programed correctly?

What I understand so works the rememotfunction fore lock an unlock the car OK then should the key be correctly inilized (se your manual)

The remotefunction have nothing to do with the alarmacktivation there is the generalmodul in the car who fix that.

I think fuse 48 5A is blown its located in the relaycentral just over battery. Its fore larm. and movingsensor, larmsignal

As far as I know:
1. It sounds like you are not leaving it long enough for the alarm to set.
2. It is not possible to initialise the key wrong and so cause the alarm not to work.
3. The alarm functions and the key remote functions are both controlled by the general module.
4. It is possible to code the general module incorrectly but that is unlikely to be the problem here as the alarm worked with the old key.
5. Locking with the remote will set the alarm and then opening with the key in the barrel will trigger the alarm as the barrel does not turn the alarm off.
6. Key memory setting could be the problem but I don’t ever recall hearing of that option.

The answer will be in serial diagnostics to the general module to see the alarm status but only if 1 above is not the case.

Thank you.

I have checked the fuse number 48 and changed it. Now the alarm is
functioning fine.

Best regards,
Tony

Question.

Either my key battery is dead or the receiver is malfunctioning.

When I lock the car manually with the key in the door lock, is the alarm still on.

Currently I believe that the alarm is on, but the interior alarm is off?

Any ideas on how to test,

ta

Hi,

From what I understand if the car is locked with the key in the door then
the alarm is not armed. Also, if the light under the mirror is not flashing
red then I also believe the alarm is not armed.

I think that the internal movement sensor is only not operational if the
car is locked with the remote and a window or the roof is left open,
otherwise, if all are closed I believe the internal movement sensor is set
when the alarm is armed by the remote.

Regards,
Tony
