After switching the engine off on my E34 535i sport there is a strange 'whirring' noise that sounds like its coming from just behind the dashboard,it lasts about 3 seconds. Ive heard some people say it may be some kind of valve re-setting. Has anyone got any ideas on what this noise is and whether its supposed to be doing it ?

Every E34 I've ever been in does it, from 518i to M5. Someone told me it's the pressure regulator for the wipers, so they stay in contact with the windscreen all the time.

You sometimes hear it as you drive off from cold as well, just as you're slipping into 2nd gear.

Of course there's the buzzing from the idle control valve and the sound from the auxilliary water pump as well under the lid.

My Dad's 328i has a noise behind the passenger side of the dashboard which carries on for about 10 minutes after stopping the engine, might be the e-box fan but no one's sure !
