I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

I hope this will help and become a useful thread

Regards
Guy

Cool car!

I would look at a good 10w-40 semi synthetic (all semi synthetics are 100% mineral) with some regular changes will be fine.

Have a look at the Silkolene XTR 10w-40 http://www.opieoils.co.uk - http://www.opieoils.co.uk

I have an '86 318i E30 that I bought to restore (which is taking a lot longer than I want!) but I changed the oil a good while ago (I can't remember...prob a year an a half to 2 years!) as I'm not driving it yet. I can't remember what I put in but I guess I should change it as I understand oil breaks down over time? Also what oil should I be using? Cheers!

Indeed the oil does break down over time, or more the additives do.

10w-40 semi will be fine.

Cheers

This is a question not on what type of oil but on how bad is overfilling an engine a little with oil?

I serviced a car I wasn't familiar with but there was a haynes manual for it and it specified how much oil to put in but once I did this it was well over the max mark. I let out about an average bowl full of oil and it now shows just a little over the max mark. I couldn't let out any more as the owner wanted the car but it just got me thinking would overfilling a bit harm the engine? (I know a lot over the max mark is putting pressure on the engine).

I dont think a little over filling will do any harm.
