Hi

Was wandering my e34 540i idles at 400 (touch below half). it sounds ok tho! its not struggling or nothing.does anyone know what the proper idle for this model is? It idles 400 both hot and cold. when i rev it there is no delay or missing. Car was serviced not long ago. its always revved at 400!

cheers

Mine idles at 500 rpm when hot but about 700 when cold. I thought 500 was low but like yours, mine sounds fine. If you are sure it's running ok and goes fine then I'd not worry, unless your fuel consumption is sky high, then worry!

My E60 V8 idled at 500 rpm when warm, up to 1000 rpm I think when first starting.

The Diesel 520d I've got just now idles about 650 when clutch is in and about 750 when clutch is out.  Go figure that one?

if you think you have a fuel consumption problem but the engine seems to run ok, perhaps you have a heavy right foot! lol

Maybe the idle control valve is on it's way out or you possibly have a vacuum leak somewhere though usually that manifests itself by the engine running lumpy. Do the revs pick up fine and quickly if you rev it hard? if not then it could be one of those mentioned or your air flow meter needs a clean.
