You need to pull the OBC Out from compartment and on back there is 2 tabs
This takes off cover to reveal the bulbs

To go slightly o/t on this subject but not much...
1/ How do you "pull the obc out..." Brute force?
2/ I have No illumination on SWMBO's at all , are there other bulbs, or is it broke?

Just put a small blade under it and it more or less falls out
Or on e36 there is a samll hole at back of compartment you can stick your finger in and push

Pete thanks for going to all the trouble of the photos , but mine is not a "Digital " one . Mine is a normal clock with the hands .
I have had the clock out of the dash board & the back off the clock , but then it just seams to be a sealed unit ???

Remove clock,
unplug wires feeding clock at the back of the clock in the centre should be the recessed screw in bulb,
unscrew and replace with new bulb.
[Refit is the reversal of removal]

so it does / so there is
OK - new bulbs = illuminated digital clock, and an OBC that now tells me when I press the check button that there are no errors!
Well, not so far anyway.....
