I once was almost tempted to buy a 1992 525I manual that had done  512000 KMs... Serious mileage. I think that is about 320000 miles!!!

Shocking hey!!! Still looked in very good nick though and started first time. Serviced from new by BMW! Going for less than a meal at Macdonald's

Mine has only covered 22K in nearly 5 years. I bought it 6 months ago with 12k on it.

So I have a fair bit to catch up.. and at 20mpg ave. I cant afford to catch up.

My 540 had about 120k when i bought it, tis now on 145k and in that time has never missed a beat or cost me anything apart from front arms and servicing costs.

Fingers crossed i'll get the same performance from the next 145k!

Absolutely Brilliant.

Doubt my old 93 is still even knocking around. Started to get very touchy at 80K and had to go by 85K.

God help anyone who bought it.

Iwas quite surprised at this until I saw the rest of the article at the bottom. He has had the head gasket replaced 3 times. So that is a bit more than just the general maintenace that he claims. Also, he states that most of his miles are driving across rural Wisconsin which puts almost no wear and tear on the engine (eg Highway driving).

There is no reason why most cars if lookes after properly with regular oil changes, transmission changes and head gasket changes cannot last forever. Plus, his car was made in a time when Aluminum in an engine was rocket science stuff! I bet if that car had lived its life in London, it would be a shed by now!

And as he also says, he drove the car very carefully, meaning it never went above 3000RPM...??? I also find it hard to believe that there has been no suspension work done like bushes and other things...

Hats of to him for getting his car to this mileage, but it is not quite as rossy as the article paints, I bet...

Just my 3.2 cents

The 1992 E34 520i on my drive is still on original clutch, gear box, diff and timing chain at 165,000. (Head gasket done at about 100K according to paperwork).

So by the looks of things it's still only just run in. Glad I didn't buy the Merc!
