When I change gear and more specifically, when the drive is taken up, there is a slight 'clunk' noise audible from 'between the gear box and the back end.' It can be mostly overcome by matching the revs to the road speed but would be grateful for expert 'hopiniohons' as to what it might be.

The joys of classic car ownership, eh? You get (at least one!) thing fixed and then another one bubbles up to the surface.

Sounds to me like rear axle mount/beam bushes to me.They give a clunk everytime you change gear.

It really is a specialist job only as they can be a pig to get out,and you need special tools too.

I had them replaced on both my E30 and E34.

Cost was around £150.00 IIRC

Hope that helps

I had this problem on my e30 m3 , it turned out to be the drive shafts were knackered , jack up the rear of the car and turn the wheels and backwards and forwards
and see if you can hear the clunk , or twist the the drive shafts to if there's to much play ..
