I have an E34 535i Sport whihc has just developed a 'clunk' on the rear driver's side wheel. I have checked the suspension, etc and all appears to be ok. I have also had the wheel off and can't see any problems. It sounds like the wheel bearing but it is difficult to be sure since the car is rear wheel drive and I can't 'spin' the wheel of the ground to pick up on any tell tell noises. Any advice?

If it is a clunk when you put the power on or let it off it could well be the rear suspension crossmember mounting vertical bushes have worn out. Very common on the E34.

Does the clunk occour when you change gear. If thats the case then it is probably a propshaft cupling (Rubber Donut). These cost about £25, but it's quite a labour intensive job on an e34. About 4 hours as you have to remove the rear cross member, exhaust and some other bits and pieces.
