Brian, It started to sound a bit 'throaty for the suburbs' after a trip to
Manchester and back, the metal on the rear box has ripped like paper, i've
had to hang it up with string - how very nice that looks !

Mine is hanging on cable ties insted of the rubber grommets. Has surfived two Ring trips and two MOT's with the cable ties
Rubber mounts fall off every 3 month. Probably the price you pay for uprated suspension.....

I'm kinda glad I sold mine before fitting it and stuck with a new original system. It's almost worth the money to just fit it and forget it.

everyones been rating the milltek system. i dont like the way it looks or sounds.

ive got a scorpion on mine which ive had for 2 years with no issues whatsoever. so what if its loud - u should hear it in the tunnels!!

in fact, ive never had a problem with any of my scorpions on any of my cars.

i also dont like the supersprint stuff - my brothers had problems with the centre box on his e30 m3 and the decat centre section i bought for my e36 328 sport was appauling in terms of build and fitment.

scorpion all the way for my (contradictory to current opinions...)

Steve, I thought your's was a bit noiseier than I remember Kevins Cecotto being at Silverstone last year. Mine is super quiet! . I think some stern complaints should be made to Miltek, speaking to them on the phone when I ordered mine (which I never used and sold on again) they seemd very keen and friendly. I am sure they would rather sort these problems out once and for all to maintain a good reputation.

I'm surprised to see so many people complaining, I was always under the impression that milltek had a good reliable product.
I had a system fitted to my VR6 Golf for over a year before the car was sold, the sound was perfect and I had absolutely no problems at all.
in fact been looking at fitting a system to the M5, it was a toss up between the Milltek system and the Hayward & Scott but the Milltek was shading it. I may have to reconsider my decision.

My Miltek keeps cracking around the weld where the pipe goes into the centre section , but i think that is more down to it grounding on B****Y speed humps than build quality .

Having said that the car is running standard suspension setup, and the centre section sits lower than i feel it should .

cheers

Andy

My opinion - it`s a piece of crap.
I bought one of the early ones. It had some dodgy welds that needed grinding down to make it fit. There were no gaskets although this wasn`t a major issue but is not ideal. Then within just 12k miles (I think - I did report here originally) it became buzzy/rattly.
I understand they have good customer support which is good but are backing up a crap product (IMO).
And yes, the centre section on my car sat very low on a car with std suspension - it bottomed out a few times mostly in multistory car parks.
When I pay me money, I don`t like becoming a product tester for a company. I don`t mind if it`s just the odd problem but it seems like even the updated Milltek isn`t perfect either.

Std BMW exhaust all the way!!!!! Hell, the milltek gives ya 1hp (or whatever) but probably also increases drag also the way it hangs down.

H&S seem to have had their own problems too with an exhaust for the S14. Bar original equipment, the Miltek seems best (of a bad lot?)

I stupidly sold an Eisenmann back box from my car to fund a full Miltek system. Worst thing ever. That Eisenmann was fitted when the car was new and lasted 15 years before I removed it.Some minor welding and it is now fitted to another members car....and I want it back !

Oh yeah, it sounded wayyyyy better than the Miltek

there is no way i have lost power with my scorpion, no way. it has gained so much everywhere. how could a straight through system loose power anyhow? there is nothing to restrict the exhaust flow, and the pipe diameter is the same.

doesnt e30 m3 DTM IT run mega power and insist on only using scorpion exhausts?

my friend also had loads of troubles with his milltek on an audi s3.

I have dyno'd and mapped may cars which "straight through" and "un-restricted" exhaust systems. It appears that most do not work and infact actually loose power. Some however do work.

My SE had an Hayward and Scott system fitted whn I bought the car. The power was approx 160ish BHP. It jumped up 40 BHP when I fitted a genuine system WITH catalysts. This seems to be more to do with the "X" section. The Hayward and Scott doesn't have this, or it never on mine, and I understand the Scorpian doesn't either. The "Y" peice on the Miltek works simialr to the "X" section on a standard exhaust, so this is why the Miltek doesn't loose power, and maybe gains it? Who knows?

Id really like someone from Miltek to post on this thread. Doubt it will happen mind.

I dont thnk anybody feels its a poor system in terms of the gaining power. As I see it, theres 2 main issues.

1)Fitment (IMO just needs the pipe that comes from the centre box to have more of an angle before the rear box. And raise the centre box slightly)

2) Build Quality (Welds really)

Shame, as with a bit of work on those details would become standard fit for all E30's. Having said that, aren't the S14's buzzy characteristics quite harsh on stainless steel?

EDIT for Rezaq
Its something to do with the way the gases come down the pipe. IIRC NA send "pulses" whereas Forced Inductions send a fairly continuous flow. AFAIK NA cars require a certain amount of back pressure to help scavenge the gases in the most effective way. Whereas Turbo cars just need the largest diamter pipe you can find. If you get a chance do a Google for it.

Well, the SE original genuine system is stainless steel, and that lasts 15 or so year without too many problems.

If the BMW back box would be the same quality as the centre, there would be no need to buy anything different. Most of the back boxes I have seen/welded seem to rust where the pipes are going IN. Looks like the slight angle of the box collects all the condensation in the bottom corner. And the catalitic converters do really "help" in this case as well with very corrosive condensation.

My Milltek has always sounded rubbish, but before that it had a Scorpion
and anyone who says that they are OK must be completely deaf and drive
like a coffin dodger. They are rubbish on an E30 M3, but might be fine on
other cars? Car drives much better now, revs and pulls much more cleanly,
but its still way too loud, why can't someone make a reasonable (£500)
exhaust that fits, lasts, works and is quiet? Is it really that difficult? Must be I
guess

Development - most companies can`t be bothered with it, orcant be bothered in doing it properly especially when sales will be limited on such a limited edition car - it keeps the cost down. BMW of course developed the E30 M3 exhaust - hence the cost 8-).

I don't think anyone from Milltek comes on the forum - but here is their link http://www.millteksport.com/ - http://www.millteksport.com/

Call them, explain the problem, and - if you are the original purchaser - they will probably replace the part FOC.

I've had one fitted for ages to my E30 M3, as it was an early design I had a couple of problems with the centre box, but they replaced it both times with no problem.

The first time they fitted it for me, the 2nd time they sent the new part to the Exhaust Specialist of my choice within 2days!

I like it, yes it's a bit buzzy, but it isn't noisy, and in keeping with the car -

If oyu have issue with speed bumps etc get some "rub strips" welded on, i had this issue, and had two lengths of flat bar welded to the bottom of each silencer, with a lead in to each. stopped all my porblems of regular "patch ups and cracking".

Lower grade stainless will rust. it also means its less prine to fatigue. normally a decent wall thickness, and a higher grade stainless stop this, but alot of aftermarket places, especially in stainless save here, and use a thn walllower grade. It works for most people, but the quality isnt generally what people expect.

I welded a Scorpoin back box and it was thin like paper!
But even the well praised EISENMANN uses only 304 SS. I was a bit disappointed by my fellow contrymen when I read that in the paperwork. They are asking for good money and one would wish they use the best material.

I have banged on abut my friend russell who works for longlife before. indeed they were victim/ at fault with this as well. They also had a large batch of backbox's that just blew through, leaving you a hollow box in a short period of time.

My friend russell i trust. Every actual company i do not. If you need any stainless repairs or a decent system find his details on my site. the quality varies alot, but stress to the person who is going to custom make your system what you want and read the small print.

Russell is forever removing mass produced systems like this and for this very reason. You get what you pay for.

Why has noone mentioned or recommended Supersprint?! I decided to go for one of these as I had read all the problems people were having with the Miltek.

I fitted it to my Cecotto. It was about £450 for backbox and centre section, fitted perfectly, sounded great and in the 12k miles I had it not one problem, I even gained a little bit of power. The one I fitted (I think) was the mild stainless version but afaik was TUV approved, I thought it was great.

See a result - of sorts. I'm not really surprised they haven't any on the shelf, after all E30 M3's aren't as common as - say - a Golf.
