Subject: E39 Clock Symbol SI lights

I started the car this morning and the clock symbol appeared.

This is the first time I have ever seen the clock symbol appear since I bought the car in August 2004 with 46,000 miles on the clock.  It now has 72,000 miles on the clock.

Can some of you helpful chaps and chapesses clarify a few things on this please.

#1 My understanding is that the clock symbol is purely to tell you that the brake fluid needs changing?

#2 This light appears every two years?

If #2 is correct then if my car has a built date of June 1998 why would the clock symbol appear in April, two months before the anniversary of its construction?

The previous owner, in May 2004 paid for an Inspection II service which included a brake fluid change, so I am presuming that the clock symbol last appeared in April 2004.

I replaced the brake fluid myself in February at 70,000 miles so I am happy that the work has been done.

The car has less than 1000 miles to go before it will be so kind and tell me it wants an oil service.  I presume the clock symbol can be reset at the same time as the green SI lights when I get it serviced very shortly.

Can you reset just the clock symbol without resetting the green SI lights?

Any clarification on this matter would be gratefully received.

Andrew

I think the clock requires a reset similar to an inspection but yes, you can turn it out then.
Does the clock not also suggest doing coolant?

It can be reset manually from the buttons on the dash, my Indy reset mine in a matter of seconds, but I wasn't quick enough to watch the sequence he used on the buttons behind the steering wheel. He did it FOC as the car had recently had a service and they'd done the brake fluid and coolant then.

Thanks guys.  I did the coolant myself back in January when I changed the 'stat and water pump.

Previous owner never had a record of the coolant change only brake fluid.

Not sure if the earlier ones are different but in the service booklet for face-lifted E39's (at least) is says every 2 years for brake fluid and every 4 years for coolant. Hence why perhaps it was just the brake fluid last time?
