I was looking at the selection of Duckhams oils at one of the local motor factors and they have a 15W40 mineral oil and a 10W40 synthetic based (semi-synthetic?) oil.

Which would be the best for an E30 318iS? Price isn't an issue since they are roughly the same price, but I wonder would the synthetic based oil be a bit too thin for the M42 engine? The oil is changed every 3,000 miles.

No, use the 10W40 semi, the M42 is a relatively advanced engine.

I use 10W40 semi syn in my M42 without any issues. I change it when the service indicator tells me to - about 6,000 miles.
