E39 Brake Fluid top up location

Hi Everyone

I was trying to locate the top up Brake fluid reservoir the other day - the hanbook stats that it is located underneath the N/S Filter Housing.

I don't seem to be able to find it without stripping the unit down completely.

Any help would be appreciated.

My car is a 1997 540i V8

Yep- its under the near side pollen filter housing. I cant remember exactly how you get at it though but you have to remove the housing to get at it.

Hi,

To get at the break fluid is easy. On the drivers side (RHD) locate the pollen filter box. Pull down the black bar that runs accross the front of the filter box. Remove the Filter. The air channel that runs in behind the engine also needs to be removed. This is done by prising up the 3 plastic clips where its connected to the filter box. When this is loose the channel will move clockwise away from the filter box. At the front of the box is a silver clip which clips the box to the strut. Pull this clip out and the box is now free to lift up and out. Under here should be a nice clean break fluid resevour.

Be careful removing the pollen filter air duct as the clips that lock and un lock the duct in place on the bulkhead, one has broken on my car after repeated removal and refitting.

If you are bleeding the system, buy 2 litres of fluid.  That will guarantee that you change all the fluid.  Takes a while and I used a mate to pump the pedal while I made sure the brake bleeding hose stayed attached to the bleed nipple.

Buy the BMW fluid as it is the cheapest DOT 4 fluid I could find.  It is cheaper that the Castrol DOT 4 and Halfrauds own brand DOT 4.  If BMW is the cheapest, I figured I couldn't go wrong.

True, 1 clip on mine was broken when I removed it... Must have been of before....
