Richie - as John mentioned, the plate is probably worth a few quid.  It might be worth getting it on to a retention certificate if you have access to a UK address where you can register the car to do it.  It would slow up the process of getting on the road here but might help you with your house deposit!  Otherwise the plate goes back to the DVLA and they'll sell it again.

btw. was the car a repo by any chance?  Its unusual enough for a plate like that to go with a car otherwise.

The car looks great.  Is it a Sport spec or were the wheels retro fitted?

The guy I bought it off went to the DVLA the day before I got there and transferred it back to himself. It's an S plate now.

Will that slow things down anyway?  You'll need the reg doc or a Certificate of Permanent Export to register the car here.  A change of ownership and/or plate can take 4 to 6 weeks until the new V5 is issued.  My 325i had a plate change and it took about 4 weeks for Swansea to process it.

@Dergside...yeah,I'm waiting on the V5 to be sent back from the DVLA. They gave the guy who was selling it colour copies of everything for me.

@Les...I think not

On paying the vrt is it true that the price can change with extras on the car - alloys, leather, lower mileage  etc

If you bought the car with the plates on it, surely they a)belong to you or b)their value should now be taken from the price of the car?  Or had he told you before you made the deal?
