Right - I have gone and upgraded the forum (for those who didn't notice).
There are a number of changes from the previous version such as:-
* the star / user level system works (see below)
* the ability to add polls (only moderators can add them - if you want one email me @ mailto:forum@bmwcarclubgb.co.uk - forum@bmwcarclubgb.co.uk )
* the avatars now occupy a larger space. The avatars from the old forum were not included in this one and hence look a bit funny. I will update to allow more decent avatars when I get the chance.
* the website board (this one) has the ability to allow guests (unregistered members) post. This will let members who have a problem registering let the moderators know.
* The forum also has the ability to allow files to be uploaded but I currently have not enabled this.
* Moderators and other ranks set up as follows:

[EDIT] this section of the message has been updated on page 2 of this thread[/EDIT]

Anyway I hope the board is a bit better than the last. I am also trying to resolve the email notification issue. If you have any further comments please add them on here or email to mailto:forum@bmwcarclubgb.co.uk - forum@bmwcarclubgb.co.uk

Furthermore, you may notice initially that even though you may have posted loads of messages your user level doesn't appear correct. This will fix itself when you post your next message!

Furthermore (#2) as this forum uses a different database to the previous one links to forums, threads, etc may have changed. If you have a website linking to somewhere within the forum please double check the link.
Thanks
Killian

I'm getting eMail notifications for topics I hadn't asked to watch...

When I follow the 'stop watching' link, I get a message confirming that I've stopped watching the forum rather than the message - bug?

I think I know what the problem is Webdunk:-
If you posted a message (on the previous board) to a forum it not thinks you want to receive email notifications of any emails to that board. Have a look at the bottom part of the threads page for any board and you will see what I mean.
I reckon this will just affect those with moderator status but let me know if not.
Killian

I'm getting notifications for posts I haven't added anything to also?

Only for these forum info posts though, nothing from the other boards.

Adam - check to see if you are subscribed to either the thread (at the bottom of this page you will see 'un-watch this topic') or the forum (at the bottom of the main threads listing page you will see an un-watch this forum...')
Hope this helps & apologies for inconvienence to all
K.

I'm getting these mails too... but when I got into the topic, it only gives me the option of 'Watch this topic' not 'Unwatch this topic'...

Will try again later to unsubscribe - keep getting a page not available error message...

With all this moaning going on, I should point out I like the new forums!!

Well done...

cheers - guess my day wasn't wasted!
I have temporarily disabled the email notification until I get it resolved - I would rather people didn't get p'ed off  receiving loads of mail from the board!

But Killian, I quite like all those e-mail notifications.. my inbox was really full when I opened it today!

The site looks really good, well done.

Could you rearrange the e-mail notification.. and get the actual message nearer to the top.. so that you could read it without having to scroll down.

I think it's really good. Well done. It certainly seems a lot faster. Nice one.

may I suggest that Moderator status is not automatically given to those with a high number of posts? It would mean that in a few months there could be many!

I think it needs to be a combination of contributions AND a decision from Killian/Howard.

As this is a public forum for the club, I think moderators need to be club members and very aware of the effects of public comments and the action of moderating.

Point taken.
I will remove moderator status form you all then.
I had planned on raising the threshold every month by about 30-40 posts resulting in the same few people keeping moderator status.
Furthermore, I have no idea who here is a club member so what I will do is accept applications from whoever wants to be a moderator (and has posted more than 50 posts [to ensure they know the procedure]) and then go through the process of setting them up (including confirming club membership).
These applicants can be moderators of the whole forum or can just moderate 1 or 2 individual boards.
If you can think of another method let me know.
If anyone is interested then let me know at the usual address ( mailto:bmw@kbannon.com - bmw@kbannon.com )

I third the motion.
What killian has proposed as a solution seems fair enough to me.

It is already changed so the ranking system is now as follows:

Guests -  - unregistered and logged out members - they can read all messages but only post messages to the website & announcements board.
Newbie -  - registered members up to 40 posts - these members can vote in polls
Groupie -  - registered members up to 100 posts - these members can vote in polls
Senior Member I -  - registered members up to 150 posts - these members can vote in polls and create sticky topics
Senior Member II -  - registered members up to 250 posts - these members can create polls, sticky topics
Really Senior Member -  - registered members up to 500 posts - these members can create polls, sticky topics
Really Senior Member II - registered members over 500 posts - these members can create polls, sticky topics
Moderator -  - club members who currently have posted more than 50 posts and who would like to become moderators - these members can post new polls and edit posts. If they edit a post then the moderator's username and the time are shown on then post. Moderators priveliges do not include post deletion - if a post needs to be modified they edit it and explain why - e.g. post edited for breaking For Sale rules. If you want to become a moderator then mailto:forum@bmwcarclubgb.co.uk - email us .
Admin -  - the boss!

The admins will reserve the right to modify the number of posts needed before a particular status is reached!

I still think that you need fewer rather than more moderators. They need to be active throughout the board as you say though. I would suggest that existing or potential moderators are managed to ensure that all forums are covered.

Once you have to coverage, then you don't need more forums!

I mostly visit the E30, Irish and General Technical so I can watch those.

...I guess that's an application to become a moderator if I'm needed!!!

Posted By: kbannon
Date Posted: 11-July-2003 at 17:29

Application will be duly processed B318isP.
I would prefer to have a few more moderators - at the moment it is myself, Howard & Webdunk and it can be tiresome (for me anyway) having to try to look at all posts for rule breakages.
BTW Brendan - there is no E30 forum!

Stick me forward for moderator (if you want me and I fulfill the requirements) as well K.

I think people who visit the forums regularly throughout the day should be moderators - such as Brendan, yourself webdunk, and perhaps me.

What do you think??

I didn't realise til just now that this was a 'public' forum.. I thought that you had to be a member of the Car Club in order to post topics.

I'm not sure of the moderator idea though...
.. perhaps certain trusted guys could 'police' the site but leave the actual moderating as it is.
