I carried out that repair last year and its a tuff one even for someone with technical background. My repair lasted about six months before it developed the same symtoms. Its not easy getting the correct capacitor either (even at Maplins). I tried another fix but the board was becoming burnt and loss of contact space became the real issue.

Eventually I sent it to that guy in Torquay who charges £45 with a 48 turn round. 12 months on air con computer still working fine.

I cant remember the website though, its something like

Hi Paul

My airc-con problem was in my 98 316se. The symtoms were as follows:- Digital display freezes, Air con computer switches it self on and off, Blower goes to full blast when ignition tunred on, Non of the buttons work and also it will work fine for a few days then go off again. I didn't have any issues about heat, however since it has been repaired the temperature is more reliable and hotter than before. Your unit may be in its early days of going faulty and start to develop the other things later. On the other hand it could need gassing. Hope some of this helps you Paul.   Dave
