I didn't realise you were doing all the work yourself

Are you looking for the Metal Sills or the sideskirts?

I assume you have looked at www.realoem.com? My ETK needs reinstalling on a new laptop but that is another story

The E30 M3 can hide it's rust quite good.I'm finding that out for myself having taken my car off the road.
Still, look on the good side. Unlike my tiny garage, you don't seem short of space !
Good luck with the project and keep the pics coming please.

Did'nt get much chance to work on the car today, the boss wanted me to do some work!!! So got it back on it's wheel's, and after loading the photo, Think we have a ghost in the garage, no the car is not on fire and I was not having a fag... Weird, or someone over seeing the project!!!

Shot of some of the bit's that have been removed

Rear window out

shot of the scuttle 1, talk about rust

Side window's out, no problems here

Other side of the scuttle, more rust, it only looked like a bleb when the screen was in!!!!

front screen out

The wing's looked O.K but..........

Was going to cut the bottom off the wing's and plate them, but sincs I have gone this far... the part's on order so far are..Rear panel (Here), Scuttle, Monday, 2 sills, 2 wing's,sun roof surround, and various other item's, clip's trim, nut's bolt's etc.
The window guy's to me were spot on, £80.00 (cash) to remove and replace all window's, I would have looked at it for a week scratching my head, took them 30 min's, good money for them and well worth it to me.
Today's worst job...having to work most of it.
Going to take the dash out in the morning... must admit, not looking forward to that

Mark, all those pics look familiar, I've been there summer just gone, seems to be all the same places too, rear valence, scuttle, though mine was OK under the windscreen rubber, it was rusted down where it meets the wings.

A little off topic, but how hard was it to remove the rear side windows?

Rhys,

Simon, didnt take the side windows out myself, but watching the guy's took them 5 mins, door pilar trim has to come off and you need a long reach 8mill slim socket as there are 2 screws in the door pilar, the rest are clip's. It was well worth paying them as you need to know what you are doing, thought they would have cracked the screen taking it out as it has a few chip's in it, but no, out in one piece

ROB, you have been my inspiration but time will not let me go as far as you have. I have untill 23rd of this mth. had a look at your link and well what can anyone say
P.S How hard is it to remove the dash???

Cheers Mark

Removing the dash is time consuming and fiddly, but not difficult if that makes sense! It's only actually held in by 4 bolts iirc, just label all the wiring plugs up when removing everything, and bag the screws/clips for different parts up seperate.

Hardest part in my opinion was removing the heater control panel, but I think you can get away with leaving this fixed, just un-screwed from the dash.

Well, its a piece of P on a LHD car, but as yours is RHD, well now thats another story!  Joke aside, it is actually quite simple, there are a couple of hidden screws with the heater control panel, but are pretty obvious to find. Obviously the center console has to come out first, then the heater panel - cables can be fiddly, S'wheel, instrument pack, glove box and lower dash panel then alls revealed. Its really not that bad.

Good luck with the resto, don't skimp on anything, it isn't work cutting corners, as you may well know.

Paul.

The rear side windows are not too difficult to remove.

The key to it is two little nuts that hold the trim on through the B post. IIRC the bottom one is accessed from behind the rear trim panel. To get at the top one you have to remove the coat hook.

Once those are off you can ease the rubber over the lip from the inside and the whole thing - window, rubber and trim - comes out in one piece.

At least that is the way I did mine.

Edit: sorry to duplicate the above post but it was not there when I started writing this post! I've taken an age finding, resizing and uploading the photo.bigok

I have found similar problems as the above photos. My scuttle was not so bad (but I still replaced it) and my sills were OK.

The photo was taken last May and I am sorry to say that it does not yet look much different.

Well some idiot(me)did'nt take the camera into work today so will have to double up on the photo's tomorrow, sorry lad's.
Did'nt get much done on Sat. morning, too much talking with Chris and Tim over Tim's new car,and nice it is(wish mine was in the same state at the moment) , but as he has said himself the "list" has started!!!!
So on to today, well the dash is out, along with the interior, thank's Simon and Paul yes you are right, it is held in with 4 screw's, and lot's of wires, they all have lable's on .Also the back pannel has been removed along with the scuttle,so not a bad day, apart from....
Looking at the car at 4pm today, dash out wires all over,no inside's (plus all the outside bit's) I was thinking
What the have I taken on...
Should get the rear pannel fitted tomorrow, plus a bit of "prep" work on other bit's....Must remember to take the camera
The one thing I'am having a real panic over is when will the scuttle turn up.Without that, can not put the dash back and that will slow thing's down
Photo update Tuesday evening!!

actually one of the american car mags took a bunch of left hookers out of a multi story car park where the ticket machine was on the wrong side of the car, various other drivethroughs, toll roads etc were involved too, pictures of a 69 mustang and a 71 dodge charger reversing through mcdonalds was quite amusing

Well was hoping I could get the back pannel in today, but again I had to work, so only got 1 hour on the car.
Dont know if you can see from the photo's, the O/S is cut out ready for the new rear pannel, the N/S is still to do,should get this done in the morning (work allowing)!!!

This is the one that scares the fcuk(for the mod's.. French conection u.k!!!) out of me, I'm no auto electrician, and my thank's go to Nigel for the "How to do" link, all I did was follow the instruction's...Hope they work the same in reverse!!!

Well as you can see the "Scuttle" has been removed, just wish the new one would turn up.
Un like the rear pannel, I dont have the new one to marry it up to, just hope I have not cut in to far
The rust under this was well out of order
Just done a preview so hope the photo's look better....Well for you lad's anyway!!!!!
The Car and me are at our lowest ebb ,all I want is the scuttle fitted, the dash back in and the rear pannel fitted.............. After that, well It's all plain sailing... I wish

I, for one, am in awe of what Mark has taken on.  I saw the car on Saturday, when it still had the dash in (steering wheel still on the wrong side though ), and it looked like a massive project then, now it just looks scary!! redsheetfloat.gif

However, looking on the bright side......  In a few years time, mine might need doing, and as Mark will then be an expert........fingerscrossedicon.gif

Bring on the "MIG"

Mark

Hat off to you. I'm needing to do the same with mine in the next year or so, but have one advantage. It has no interior to fuss over. If i remove the dash i'd like the car rewired for what's just needed.

See you at croft '06 & Kevin as well.

Mark you should have taken the lights as they would have looked awesome on the white car. Chris has them and assume he is well happy with them.

Trial fit of the rear panel prior to welding

Rear panel fitted, spot welds only and lights in, again to check everything.

NEW PART"S all turned up and no dent's in any of them

checking the boot, again prior to totaly welding it (note the new battery mount
Was hopeing to get a full day on the car ... but managed 2hrs.
Fridays job, do the internal welds on the rear panel and grind out the external spots... Then start on the scuttle

P.S, Look's like the rear lights are on but they are not, its the reflection from the flash

Mark,

That's some project you have taken on there. I take my hat off to you

I had a similar amout of work done on my Sport earlier this year. Don't fancy doing it myself though. It's a lovely feeling knowing that there's no rust lurking under the bodykit etc.

Here's a few pics I took recently

Well today, got a full day on the car, but did'nt take any photo's, again some clot did't take the camera must put it in the glove box every day
Will get today's photo's down loaded in the morning, honest
Going in, in the morning to fit the dash.....Yes the scuttle is in,back panel is in party time (for me anyway) And a big thank you to Paul, and Sher (photo's will follow, Paul and Sher allowing)Paul is our work shop manager and Sher is one of our sales guy's with alot of welding back ground.
Although I am doing this myself, the one thing I cant do is the welding, (thought a mig was a plain!!!!)
So back panel in scuttle in, just the sill's to go.

Just love the fact they keep giving me the grinder

Mark, yes I still got mine fitted, they look real good on a white car.

As for the carpet, seeing as you're going the whole way, I'd honestly get a new carpet from BMW, it would finish the car off a treat, I think you're looking at about £250-300

Went into work this morning and the aim was to put the dash back in. made myself a cup of tea and had a look, then made myself another cup of tea and had a fag, thinking to myself sh@t got to put this back together.
Anyone looking at the earlyer shot's or who has done this will know what I mean.Anyway "It's in....
Must have lifted the dash 5/6 times and would it fit.If I had not taken it out myself i would have said "It's" to big must be out of a 5, thenon the last "jiggle" WAM it was in

All that is left to do is put the wheel back on and the trim under the column.
Two bit's on this that did my head in,A. the glove box,the 3 screws at the back, putting them back in I did sexual position's Nicola would have been proud of and
B. the main dash, (Pod"s) dont push the bottom in to far, did this and had to take it back out twice to get it right

Well I think it's a snug fit, dont think you could get much closer

End result
Me, well chuffed it"s back in.....

Got to take my hat off to you mate, you're doing a grand job on the car. I'm working away at the moment but I've been following your progress through the forum with avid interest. Car looked a sorry state when you started attacking the tin worm, however it's coming on a treat.  If I get a chance when I'm home I might get to come and have a butchers. Keep the good work up, only thing now is screwing the thing back together that will take the time.

Good luck and have a short rest over Xmas before getting back into it.
