No, not Civics and the like...

Some of the prices on BMW's from Japan are unreal... I've posted them up here http://www.bmw-driver.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=34">http://www.bmw-driver.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=34,

But examples include a 1988 M3 with 30K on the clock for €3,200!! VRT & VAT will add to it obviously, but some of the cars are dirt cheap - 850i for €800!!

I wonder if they are cheap because of the Japanese equivalent of the NCT? It's supposed the make owning an older car in Japan prohibitively expensive.  However, I don't think it would be easy to verify a service history written in Kanji!

Its called the Shaken - basically means an car over 3 years of age needs the full brake & suspension system replaced if the car can be driven again. Because the cars are cheaper anyway, most people just go out and buy another car.

The cars are all graded before they're sold - the auction sheet has details of any work that needs to be done on the car - most of the BMW's are 3.5 or 4 (5 being the best) - the E30 M3 is a grade 5 which means the car is basically in the same condition it left the factory in!! The whole verifiying the service history could be trouble some alright!!  Most of them are barely onto Inspection II territory though!!
