Frightening is another way to put it. Came as quite a shock I can tell you.

My wife came with me for this appointment, so at least she knows what I know.

We were told that my condition is a mild form of ms, but its still not exactly something you feel comfortable about, despite reassurances of no reassurances!
It can't go away apparently, but can flare up from time to time with different symptoms.

I've been told to go about life as i have been, de-stress (LOL, work, cars, wife...etc, no chance!!) as much as I possibly can. I have NOT been told I can't drive, drink, smoke, fart etc.......!

Apparently many people have MS, but aren't necessarily aware of it.
My GP had already put two & two together from some recent issues & one going back 6 yrs.

I rang my Mum tonight & told her, as I did my bro in Ireland. They've been chasing me up ever since I had an MRI brain scan some months ago.

I havn't told my 14yr old, mainly because he'll worry & thats the last thing I want him to do.

I have been deliberating as to whether to share this info or not, but have decided on balance that I would as no harm can result. You guys are my friends after all.

Good on ya Dave. I think its the better option to keep these sort of things out in the open. Should make it easier to cope with. I too wish you all the best.

Dave

That's a bum deal.  I can understand your shock and confusion.  Difficult as it might be, its important to take as many positives out of the situation as possible.

While it could progress, you've been lucky to find out an an early stage and so far, at least, its mild.  This gives you the opportunity to plan for it and to prioritize the things in your life and concentrate on the important ones and the opportunity to not waste time on the unimportant ones.  You've obviously got a family around you that you are close with and who will want to help where possible.  Take it when you need it.

Look on it as something you have to live with rather than as a limitation.  Plan for how to get the most out of the life you have.

As regards your 14yr old, I can only relay a personal experience.  A good number of years back my mother had a serious, near terminal, brain tumour.  Because of some inconsequential exams I was doing, she and my family decided not to tell me.  I figured out there was something significant amiss but went through a lot of upset on the way to the conclusion.  It was unnecessary and defeated the object of the exercise in not telling me.  She had surgery and is still doing fine today.

Obviously you need to work out a clear message for your child if you are going to give it but make it one that is realistic about how things could progress, on the downside, as well as positive about the upside.  Keeping it from him or her would be a mistake, for both of you, I think.

I'm a firm believer in the power of positive thinking.  It may not overcome all obstacles or fix things, but it does mean that you get the most out of the good things that your life has yet to deliver.  Despite your news, your life hasn't been and won't be a practice run so you owe it to yourself and those around you to make and get the most out of it.

I'm sure I can speak for the forum members in saying that our thoughts are with you!

I agree Dave,   a long time ago my mum had a miscarriage, I was about 11 and had picked up that something  was wrong Mum in hospital but no one would say why, relatives about getting in the way and so on.  My brother and I talked between us trying to work out what we had done wrong...

Obv. your lad is a bit older, but get the facts for him to read, talk it through with him and I'm sur ehe will do his best to support his old man!

Thoughts are with you.

Despite what your doctor says, I think its still against the law to drive and drink!

(sorry, a lighter moment was called for there I think....)

Cheers guys! Great comments.

I didn't post this to generate sympathy, I'm not dying.

But, i felt a need to share this, particularly because its something I can't touch or feel discomfort from, let alone truly understand.

I think I've gained strength from the act of sharing this news & think it was the right thing to do.

I'll be chatting with my GP tomorrow, so may well discuss with my wife about telling our lad. At least if I have an 'event' he'll be prepared for it & will know any action he should take.

I think ms is way more common that I believed, so I shall endevour to find out more so that maybe I can understand a little better.

Many worse things happen in our world every day, so i don't count myself unlucky.

I have just been trolling and saw your message and thought I would pass on a few things.

I have Two aunts and a wife that have MS, luckilly my wife was diagnosed as benign two years ago, this is when, amongst other things the person doesn't have an episode for over 10 years. Apparently this happens for about 10% of sufferers, so there is hope.

My Aunts are not so lucky. :(

There are many things that you can do that may help, one of which would be to join one of the MS message boards, but I would imagine that you have already thought of that.

Some of the things that my wife found that helped were,

  1. Exercise, she regularly cycled round town, exercise is supposed to really help with delaying the onset of MS.
  2. Try and get refered to the MS specialist in your area, your GP sounds switched on, but most only know what they are taught in Med School. Bear in mind that as you progress through the system you may eventually know more that your average GP about your particular from of MS and it's onset.
  3. Speak to your MS nurse, s/he will have more info on what help is available in your area.
  4. Try and find out if there is an MS Physiotherapist, they will be able to help with any rehabilitation that you may need after an episode.
  5. It often seems that each person is different, my two aunts (they are sisters) have radically different progress rates. With the younger one is progressing faster than the older.
  6. My wife tried Beta Interferon, which is only helpful in the case of Relapsing and Remitting MS, but this caused her to become really depressed, bad side affect.

I think that will be enough for you to be getting on with, I hope things go well for you.

BTW there are no restrictions on all the things you normally do, you can drink, smoke fart and f*ck yourself sensless. have always found it difficult to all of these things at the same time........although not impossible.

Allain
