Does anyone know what duty is due if I buy parts from the US as they are much cheaper & much more helpful?

Yes, I am ordering parts for a UK model before someone says it.

If the company you are ordering parts from identify the parcel as a gift, then you should not have to pay any duty on it at all. I have heard of quite a few people ordering things this way. If it is a gift then you haven't bought it, hence no duty at your end. Ask around, someone will know the full story about this.

it's a pain and i personally have found that if you look around hard enough in the UK, the US prices will not be that much better. What is it you're looking for anyway?

You'll get hit for 10% import duty and the VATat 17.5%.
I forget the limit where you can get it tax free. I think it's about £50,anything over that and factor in the tax and the postage costs.
Oh yeah, when Parcel Farce knock on the door to deliver your parcel, they wont let you have it until you give them the money for the tax. They also charge you a fee for collecting this, around £13 I believe.

Wow, I'm amazed. Go to the top of the class.
I spent 30 minutes on the phone to Sewels (BMW dealer) in Bishops Stortford, who are usually really good & they didn't have a clue & suggested they were US only parts.
On the turner only bits, I've found someone who will post them from the US as a "gift" so it's looking good.
Thanks

I have an x brace acting as a trip hazard in my garage right now. Don't want £75.00 for it.

Superb
I've sent you a PM.
That's one less thing to search for.
Now I need to find someone with a set of coilovers rolling around on their garage floor.

Cheers

Paul

The gift thing isnt always a given,

Vat and duty rates are based on

The duty being priced on the cost of the goods plus freight to the uk

The vat is then put on the goods, the freight costs, the duty and delivery costs to door

So if some friendly customs officer decides to have a look at your gift and oesnt like what he sees he can either phobne you and tell you its not a gift or put the stuff in the bin

how do i know? Ive Been in shipping for 26 years!

Also , if the sender declares a value that the courier believes to be false they can insist on your reciept before releasing the goods, then they will charge you the VAT and duty on the real amount. As they say, ask me how I know...

Cheers for all the advice guys.

In the end I decided to haggle in the UK & ended up getting a very good price on my stuff from Julian at Balance Motorsport, who was also very helpful.

I could have got it a smidge cheaper in the US still, but at least now there's no hassle & the supplier is in this country if there are any problems.

The postman has already started dropping off big parcels
