Hi folk's , i'm thinking about chipping my 318 is coupe as I don't think it's a very expensive thing to get done but my question to any members that have had it done is do you also need to get your ecu remapped or can you run it with just the chip and if so what gains will it make? (once i get induction and exhaust i will remap) just thought it would be nice to hear some of your views and it would be good info for us newbies , cheers.

I have had my 318is chipped. Ive got a Viper2 chip from Jayson "chipeduk"

Depends on the age of your car, wheather you need a chip or remap

When i fitted my chip (which is easy to do your self) i noticed a big difference. All flatspots were gone and the car felt much smoother through all the gears.

I would defo recomend this to you

ChipedUk posts on here if you do a search you will see some other posts from happy customers and can pm him for any more details u need.

Im pretty sure a 98 needs a remap, only pre 96 cars can be chipped

A chip and a remap are essentially the same thing, are they not?  You are better off getting a remap though and have it done after you do any other mods such as exhaust and induction kit.  A remap will be specific to the setup of the car at the time so you might not benefit if you do it before your other mods.

chipping refers to physically changing the ecu IC thats in place with another pre programmed IC

remapping changes the map that is on the original IC within the ecu

u can remap as many times as u like to get it right

M44 is a re-map, M42 is a chip.
Mine is a M42 - and I've got one of jay's chips and I'm quite happy with it.

(I think there may be a way of remapping M42's now, but don't quote me on that)

Yes, all above is correct :)

I remap and chip but post 1996 is almost always remap only which means no chip swap but a live flash of the ecu.

Jayson,

I'm another newbie to these concepts, I've noticed you quoting 215+ BHP gains with some of the 2.5L M50 E36 chips you sell on ebay, what sort improvements do you usually see with, say, an E36 328i remap?

cheers,

Toby

on the 328i we usually get around 16hp, add a throttble body and manifold conversion and gruppem filter and for around £750 your looking at a genuine 240hp.
