Sometimes upon starting the engine, ignition is accompanied by a strange noise which lasts for around 2 - 3 seconds. Imagine if you will (it might take a good deal of imagination and fantastic onomatopoeia): Click, WWwrrrrroooooommmmm...mmmmm grrruuurrruuuurrrrrr......mmmmmmmmm I would opine that it doesn't sound abrasive or like anything grinding, does anyone have any ideas? Sorry about the stupidity of my description.

| mine does it too... presume its the same noise given your discription, thought it may of been a heat sheild resonating but it only does it up on startup only the odd time same as yours... |

Ha ha ha.... can't have been that bad of a description then! What do you drive UJ? I thought it might be a belt or chain which needed tightening but i don't hear it at any other time. ------------- Avus E36 M3.0 |

Probably the fuel pump priming. Get a friend to put their head under the rear of the car to clarify.

description was pretty much spot compared to the noise im getting havea red 94 3.0 coupe, i think if it was a chain it would be more of a rattley noise and you'd (we'd) prob get it when turning off the engine as well, it's been like that on mine more or less since i got it, thats been about 6000 miles... (mines just creeping up to the 100.000 mark) had it checked over not long ago including rolling road and everything seems fine.. |

I sometimes get a similar noise on cold start-up (E34 M5) and was told there's some sort of vacuum pump that does it anf that it's normal - my last M5 did it too. Thanks for that, I'll sleep a lot happier now. I can believe it is a pump or vacuum for the fuel, I suppose it would make sense. Mne is a 95 3.0 with 93k. Did you have yours dyno'd? ------------- Avus E36 M3.0 |

its standard apart froma K&N panel filter and got.. 288.6 BHP 245.1 BHP @ The Wheels 259.3 ib ft of torque very happy with it, wasn't expecting that much torque though.. you ever has yours on the rollers?

I've had mine since the start of June but haven't had it dyno'd yet. It is mildly chipped with a rather obnoxious exhaust so I'm keen to see what it is putting out. ------------- Avus E36 M3.0 |

yeah i know!!!not chipped as far as i know, have all history from new and theres no mention of one, couldn't belive the torque, operator said it was very high as well and he's seen a good few of them on his rollers but said the 3.0 always put down good power.. Have you still got you cat's in your exhaust, meant to see a good increase with those gone, mine will be junked when funds allow ( aiming for 300 bhp)... you planning to put yours on the dyno soon? |

Thats a lot of torque for an unchipped motor. My 3.0 went to dastek for a unichip and is now producing 255 ib/ft of torque and 310 bhp. It wasn't too pricey either. |

Holy moly, where did you get your chip fitted Biffa? 310bhp out of the 3.0 is pretty damn good. Not that I know for sure, but there was mention of the 'front cat' being removed. Don't know if that's true or worth mentioning.... I will have it on a dyno but I've got to contend with an inspecI soon. ------------- Avus E36 M3.0 |

Got it done by Dastek ( http://www.dastek.co.uk - www.dastek.co.uk ). They have agents all over the country. The car is standard other than that. I think the cats have started to leak a bit, so I might get a free flow exhaust and free up a couple more horses. |

310 is huge power for a 3.0... mister g removing the cats is meant to be the way to 300bhp.. and with the chip you should get well above standard.. |

It's hard to say really. I drove 5 evos prior to finding the 3.0 and they all felt weak and loose compared to the one I ended up buying. I haven't driven another 3.0 as direct comparison but I surprised a bloke in his new boxster s yesterday......... ------------- Avus E36 M3.0 |

I think the 3.0L feels faster tha the evo, but thats always subjective. I've a friend with an old 911 turbo and the M3 is just as quick, and doesn't try to kill you on the corners! Tell you what I'm surprised at though. My wife has a 330d and above 50 its hard to loose it. It seems to have bucket loads of torque. Still an oil burner though! |

Get the same noise on e34 m5 this could turn into the urban myth category, but I soke to a chap that was selling one said that it had two air boxes??? a smaller one for cold starts. If I drive for half a mile it stops and reverts back to the deep notes |

300hp from a 3 litre is not hard. I get 305hp+ from a remap and filter all day long. The 3 litre is awesome. -------------

On the E34 M5 it is a small pump which recycles "dirty" air back thro the engine to keep the tree huggers happy. First time I heard it in mine I almost switch the engine off thinking something bad was about to happen.
