Carried out oil change recently on M52 engine, noticed yesterday that the oil level is about 1" too high on the dipstick. Will this be a problem if left or should I drain some out?

drain all excess out or damage can occur!

Excess oil can lead to high crankcase pressure which can lead to blow seals and other nastiness Id agree with kbannon, an inch over the mark is worth draining out

My car was overfilled with oil by a previous owner. It managed to fill
the throttle body and inlet tract, even made it as far as the air
filter. Created a heck of a mess. Excess crankcase pressure was blowing
the oil up past the piston rings causing smoke when running, and
soaking the plugs so it ran like a bag of nails on about three
cylinders. This is an extreme case obviously, but unless you like the
taste of blown head gaskets I'd get the extra out of there. Drain it
all into a clean container through the sump bung, then fill the engine
again from this with the right amount. If it has only been run for
three weeks there is no point wasting good oil!

Once heard true story about a lady who thought you should fill the engine with oil until it reaches the level of the oil filler cap, then it's nice and full And the dipstick? Well, shouldn't really be rude about the owner! ------------- "I was just clearing out the cylinders, Officer" |

This is not confined to women!...A friend of mine did this to his XR3i back in the 80's he parked it on the garage forecourt from where he bought it from and posted a frosty note to them thru their letter box.. He felt a right twot when they called him back...

My sister rang me up about a year ago saying how her car was
overheating and what should she do as the litre of oil she put into the
radiator didn't help!

On my 540 and my Dad's 328, the oil takes a while to drain down into the sump. I've left it overnight usually before topping the level off. In many cases, the dealers can overfill the oil as well. as it is rarely left to drain down for long enough. Andy ------------- Badger540 West Midlands |
