The silkolene is supposed to be the dogs for pretty much any engine, old or modern, especially high performance ones like your m3!

Yep, I agree.

The Silkolene Pro R 15w-50 or the Pro S 10w-50 are the best options for an E30 M3, especially if driven with spirit.

COME ON GUYS! Is everyone so absolutely loaded that they pay the $tealers 300 euro a pop to put chip-pan oil in their prized possesions???

HELLO? It is the only thing stopping all those expensive engine innards doing a good impression of a T-1000.

Rant over... I just want some ace oil on the cheap.

I think my car takes about 7.5L at each oil service, probably the same as most six's. Say two/three oil change/services a year, so like you said 20L each would be a reasonble target but not cheap, unless we buy a tanker load

If your service light is lit then give it a service or at least change the oil ASAP as you don't know when it was done last.

My car was fully serviced last week including all belts.  I was just wondering how you would do it if you perform your own oil changes.  I always change the oil/filters on my fiesta and CBR1000 so no worries doing the work just resetting the dash indicator. Sorry for the confusion.

Ok, here's some sort of a deal excluding carriage which I'll have to work out nearer the time as it's done on weight.

Silkolene PRO S 5w-40, 10w-50 or PRO R 15w-50 all ester fully synthetic race oils.

Or normal price (excl carriage) per 5 litres is £32.49 (RRP £45!!!)

If I can get 100litres then it will be £30.50 excl carriage

If I can get 150litres then it would be £29.00 excl carriage

If I can get in excess of 150 litres then £27.50 excl carraige

To achieve the best carraige rate, it would need to be sent to a single address so it would be best to stock up!

I will also be at the Club day at Gaydon on 21st August so will be running a pre-order list for collection on the day nearer the time.

Cheers

Simon

i'm all in favour of getting whatever's best for my engine.

Will an indy mechanic have any problem if you arrive in with your own oil in preference to his?

Not had an oil change yet as one was done in Dec before i bought it but it's on the cards (down to 3 bars on the service indicator).

EDIT: prices just posted

Motul 300V is tops, equivalent to Silko PRO. 8100 is like Mobil 1 (100% PAO.

Let's have a bit of decorum so that I can see who's ordering and who's not so, please start a list like so:

1. Oilman 10L Pro S 5w-40

2.

3.

4.

5.

Thanks

any garage even a main dealer will use parts supplkied to them by yourself (as long as they are proper parts etc) but theres nothing to stop them shoving the oil in their own car when you leave it with them, its a trust thing

Probably more like €200 euro (i hope).
We need five people to buy 20L (4x5L) to make this work. I'm guestimating a delivery cost of about £50 sterling. Soooo my calculations:

20x 5L @ £30.50 each = £610 + £50 = £660 = approx €970 / 5 = approx €195 per person

Not bad at all, considering this is the absolute pinnicle of lubes, Castrol Magnatec muck costs about the same from halfrauds.

The only thing that's mad about this price is how low it is!

Mobil 1 is £9 to £11 per litre. This stuff is in fact better as it's ester based and at £5 - £6 per litres it's a bargain. Halfords own costs about this and it's a modified mineral oil, not a proper synthetic!

Cheers

Red3, Fey, the 5w-40 is perfect for the "normal" bmw motors.
Fey are you interested in getting some??

mikerd4, the problem is that the self proclaimed decent stuff is usually not at all decent especially in the price dept. The silkolene is for real.

oilman, do you have prices on the motul stuff for robbie? Should he be using 10w or 15w in his e36 M3?

Simon what do you recommand for a 98 2.8 M52 (single vanos):

1)for engine oil?

2)for gearbox oil?

3)for diff oil, open diff, non LSD

I heard good and bad about Fuchs, what's your view?

Posted By: Fey!
Date Posted: 09-May-2005 at 12:16

Not sure; had to replace the ignition and a couple of bushings; cost me €320 and the garage I bought it off on March 1 refuse to refund that or the €130 I shelled out on their instruction for an airbag sensor and diagnostic.  The car has spent a total of 5 weeks completely off the road since I got it, and I've still to put 1,000 miles up on it.  The garages excuse for not covering what I've had to pay for it to work was "...and you only paid €12,000 for a 1998 BMW and we had to replace the clutch and flywheel costing us €1,500 and we only gave you 3 month engine and gearbox warranty so if you come after us for your money we'll come after you for that....".  And I still have to get an airflow sensor to stop it conking out.  So, bottom line, I have to look at the finances and see can I afford the proper oil!!!

I will be naming and shaming the garage post solicitor-talk; I still have copies of the ads for the car!

Here's one of them... http://motornet.webzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=202181 - http://motornet.webzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car &carID=202181

Just to put the prices in perspective, I had the 523i is for an "Oil" with the local main dealer today.  On the invoice, the oil line item is 7L @ €15 per L = €105, just for the oil!

I'm sure they use fine products (can't say I actually fault their work) but you pay for convenience and laziness.

Actually that oil price is ex. VAT so the real price for the oil is over €120!  Holy s*it!

I don't think the order needs to be rushed. We should try and cater for all members who are interested while at the same time reducing the overall cost to each member. I presume it'll be a couple of weeks between placing the order and delivery.

I'm happy to finalise my order now and wait for delivery if it means a few more members get sorted aswell as a better overall price.

I think it might be a good idea to let this run for another week!

Martin; this isn't the way I normally do business; I work in sales and if I treated my customers like that I'd be out of business a long time ago.  Unfortunately in this instance I'm in a situation where I feel I've been burned, and I think the people responsible should be put out in the open so that another unsuspecting individual acting in good faith could avoid a similar scenario.

I can only say that I'm sorry if you feel I'm acting wrongly.

I'd agree with Robbie on this. Unless anyone is in a desperate hurry, couldn't we leave it open until say the end of May? Let more ppl sort out their funds etc. or anyone who doesn't visit the site 15 times a day (is there such a person?!) find out about the group order in the 1st place.

WRT Gearbox/diff oil, how often does this need replacing and what is recommended?

I just ordered a load of bits from the stealers so I'll have to wait for the next group buy anyway.

IMO, you might as well wait to see if you get more.

Cheaper oil and carriage will work out more reasonable for a larger amount. We get absolutely stung for Ireland and most courriers won't even carry it.

You could always see if you could get a courrier to collect from us as this may work out better for you. Weight = 1kg per Litre.

Cheers

Simon

This could work out very expensive, i get lots of stuff sent from the uk and most stuff costs about 10stg for about 2kg's.  Anyway of getting an estimate on carriage.  Might be cheaper to rent a van and collect it on the ferry.

My "guestimate" based on previous shipments is for around 100kg or 100litres it will work out around £1.00 per litre through our carrier.

Still with the oil being around £5.50 - £6.00 per litre this is cheap as the RRP on the oil is £9.00 per litre excl carriage!

Still a great deal if we can get enough orders together

Cheers, Simon.

Would the shipment be to southern ireland?

We just had a quote for another order to southern ireland by road (5 days), for 305 litres which worked out at £298 all in.

The price is relatively more expensive based on volumes so if we can get some decent numbers together, it would be worth your while!

If the shipment is to northern ireland then it's hellish expensive as there is no other way than air!

TWS no, RS 10w-60 on the shelf.

How big to make it worthwhile? For me or you?

For me about 500litres! For you a mere 150litres should make things more reasonable but I can't get freight costs without total order size.

Mark i'd still put it through. Mine is due for the NCT in June but i'm not too bothered as i'm sure they'll find some reason to fail it. I'll have a good look over the car myself and make sure obvious stuff like no blown bulbs etc.

As for the rust, my car started life in the north and has some nice brown patches on the underside. I gave it a powerwash underneath over the weekend and found some nice patches but nothing terminal.....i hope.

Hope it does'nt need too much work, when is your NCT date?

Ah, well then your not too bad. Just take your time getting whatever needs attention and then call up the NCT crowd. My car has been in the south for over three years now and has'nt had an NCT in that time. I've been driving it daily to Naas and back up until about three weeks ago and it was never mentioned even when i was pulled for speeding. Of course i drive to Tullamore about two weeks ago and run into a Garda checkpoint for waste management outside the dump, the friendly Garda said if he stopped me again without the disc displayed i'd be looking at €1500!........what a joke

Anyway, i say drive it around until they stop you then apply for the test and you dont need NCT to tax your car either.
