Just wondering how many other M owners have had this experience.Had the car 4 weeks and so far on a weekly basis somebody has tried to 'race' me.
Latest being a bloke in a Ford Puma, with his girlfriend, who came flying up in the next lane, slowed so he was in my blind spot for about 10 seconds then pull along side me.Told me he thought I was a 'referee'using sign language before doing off.I suppose he might have been jealous as I only look about 21,or thought I had bagdged a 318,but was there any need for it.I was minding my own businees cruising at 45ish in a 50 zone on a lovely sunny day.Unfortunatly/fortunately I gave in and showed him that it was an M car on the next slip road onto the motorway.
Strangely it seems it's onwers/drivers of other performance cars that give the most respect.

Whilst not exactly an M car(!), believe it or not I do get chavs trying to race me in my chevette. Of course their tupperware specials beat me as I only have about 55bhp to play with, but they believe it is some sort of achievement to beat a 22 year old car in their saxos and corsas. Sad.

No doubt when the BMW is roadworthy I'll have the same morons racing me, but with a little extra right foot they may get a bit of a shock.

Strap a couple of bottles of NOS to the Chevette, that should get a reaction!

I think the real enthusiasts know the score, wheres as the max Power clan maybe just want to see a real fast car being used...

Go along to the 'pod on any RWYB/Fast Car ytpe event and youll see 'em thrashing the **** off their crap boxes on the way home trying to keep up with Porkers etc

If its any consolation, a had a Nova, 3 up, trying to "race" me thru part of Milton Keynes...I was riding the Hayabusa at the time....

I feel for ya brother....

I get it regularly, but the action that remedies it is simple (and works very well if like you there is a guy in a car with his girlfriend).

Laugh at them.  Just laugh.

They curl up like little hedgehogs and ride off into the sunset suitably humiliated....

Used to suffer a fair bit in my E34 535i Sport

The Chavs/Nova/Saxo brigade thought it was an old man in his old mans 5 series until I left them standing at the lights.

Sometimes they would look across and think I'd borrowed it from my Dad or something (I was 23 at the time).

The Nova boyz were funniest, I had one overtake me on the old Dartford 1-way system (Now two way), he had a sign in the back window that read "YOU'VE JUST BEEN NOVA-TAKEN".

Him and his silly mates thought is was hileariously funny until he under-steered straight on at the Kwik-Fit turning.

The chav-racer really doesn't stand much hope against a BM, you can leave them floundering in hot hatch wheelspin every time.

My vulnerable E30 318iS could dust down most Kev-cars, though I have to say the M3 really hasn't attraced much attention.

Yep, the Nova boys are far the worst of the "offenders" , it seems they all aspire to some form of Corsa after the Nova has completely failed the MOT on structual repairs...

Disagree on the Novas, especially round MK...its either the 318s with bodykits, or people carriers, Audi TTs or Scoobys.

Having said that its got to be considered about how fast someone else is prepared to go.......I had a mega-modded Scoob up my rear end on A5 other week, pulled away slowly but then he shot up the otuside of me when I was trying to pull out to overtake a Corsa...he got past and was doing well over a ton and I'm not doing that down speed-camera alley.

BUT this is one of the reasons I'm selling.

Being 19 when I got my first M3, I had loads of it! I still do from time to time. Culprits include:
Nasty Lexus' (trying to prove that plastic weighs less than leather)
Civic Type R(ice), Seat's, Audi's, E36's (esp Compacts!).

Plus the usual "Fast and Furious" style nasty chav-wagons!!!

It gets boring now, I had a loser in an Audi A3, new 2.0TDi trying to "race" me on a motorway. I just thought, your car is not worth my license! I have *touch wood* 5yrs NCB this year - mostly driving an E30 M3, why would I want to jeopardies it for a nasty Audi??

let face it though its not always the 'chav' fault after all alot of you are saying you'd beat them. how many of you love wasting that nova as much as he'd like to waste you? really just as bad, you've just got more money and don't have to try as hard.

I remeber on 2 occations whilst in my old renault 5 turbo on a nice bit of twist B road i over took large, quite quick cars. One was a 24 valve carlton GSI and on another day a 328 sport, both were well below the speed limit and both drove up bumper once i'd over taken.

Like a 'chav' i obviously turned the boost up to 30PSI or so which equated to around 200 BHP in a striped out renault 5 and wasted them round a road i new well

the problem is that most people with inferior cars, would die for an m3,and when they see one, they get all flustered, and just cant help themselves, they have to have a go.

I've found focus's and the new mini's the worst culprits, but i did get stuffed by a cossie that was pushing out serious horses, still you win most lose even less.

I probably would have done myself, been about 5 or 6 times so far that some chavs wanted to race and I've just though it's not worth it.But when a thirtysomething (bet that shocked you all) says your a w*****r when your minding you own business then I think that takes the biscuit.

Its easy to get sucked into it.

There was a case over here - last year I think , where two cars were dicing along the M50 (Ring road around Dublin).  One guy lost it, through the median , killed himself and I think some else in the process.  The other driver was caught and prosecuted, I think he lost his license for life and also got some serious jail time.

I use that to keep me in reality, works most of the time although not always.

I didn't think anyone wanted to race me. I used to be a nutter - flat out everywhere, although didn't think I took any risks. Now I'm a bit older, and don't really see the point of burning up twice as much fuel to get somewhere a few minutes quicker, I drive a little slower. Now I do, I now find alot of wannabe racing drivers trying to race me. I find though if you maintain the same speeds around a couple of corners they soon seem to give up and realise they don't really stand a chance.

I once had a group of lads in a Golf VR6 chase me in my Europameister, Golf VR6 out of Bristol up the M32. I pulled away from them after 140 MPH. They caught me once I was off the motorway which made me feel a little uneasy, they followed me everywhere I went untill I got onto a B'road I know well and I lost them pretty easily then.

My SE attracts attention good and bad. I mostly get stares rather that come ons. I have had a few boy racers catch me while I was plodding along, look at the car as they slowly past and went on there merry way.

My job involves alot of driving, and I really do value my licence, so unless I know the road pretty well and know whats about, I would probably leave them to it.

Agree - none of this is worth your license. A blast away from traffic lights on an A-road or putting your foot down out of roadworks on the m'way is not going to hurt anyone - you can just back off when you hit the speed limit.

Silly speeds and crazy manouevres just to prove your car is faster are not the point. Leave those antics to the chavs in Asda car park...

It can be fun, but as has been said it’s not worth it, we are responsible for actions. Due to a few seconds of “fun” we could cripple or even kill an innocent person.

Remember if you kill or hurt any one due to messing about on the road you will have to carry the guilt.

normal country road, 60 limit, Civic Type-R in front doing 25 to 30. Smoked windows few chavs in it (or should that be innit! ).
Anyway, I decided to overtake, dropped into 'S' on auto, indicated and pulled out. Started to overtake (without kickdown) and the beggers speeded up to match me, not very impressed as this can be dangerous if another car comes whizzing other way, so kicked the throttle - chav tried to match me but didnt see car in front of him and had to slow pretty rapidly since we were coming to a village (30 limit). I managed to overtake them both, pull in and still make the 30 - chavs weren't happy as they were stuck behind a stiffneck. I took a few turnings in the village and had a rest 'cos the last thing I wanted was a chav sitting on my tail (which realy annoys me).

Look at the first paragraph of yours above.

Now look at the second line.

Now I would ask you two things:

1 - do you really value your licence?

2 - you obviously couldn't care less about the value of life of those other drivers on the roads too.

I find it utterly disgraceful that someone would admit to 'racing' on a public road at a speed of 140mph.  You should be banned.  Plain and simple.

If you're going to 'race', do it on a private road or a track - not anywhere where you'll wipe out an innocent life with the slightest twitch of your steering wheel when you're leasting expecting it.

The latter happens, and there are families out there deprived of loved one that stand testament to it because of mindless idiots doing just what you have admitted to.

Plod have taken to sporadically sitting on the bridge just past landrover but they're usually pointing up the hill to catch those exiting the oval roundabout then flooring it down the hill.

Good job I was out yesterday, I might have got shouted at by Mr Coasting too! (NOM matey)

I'm not going to comment on speeding as I know its wrong and try to be sensible, but sometimes temptation and the right conditions..... you know the rest.

I think that with the chavs, if you don't take the bait, it adds an element of mystery and the 'You know I don't need to even try, so I won't!!'

always a winner!

Coasting will be pleased....do they just "zap" people or pull them over as well?

Is it a van or "proper" traffic plod?

It's not a matter of preaching and I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are so in future don't think you have the right to tell me to stop expressing it.

140mph on a public road is lunacy and that's a fact.  Anyone who condones it doesn't deserve a licence and you have to question the mind of someone who thinks it's fine to do it in a 'race' with another motorist.

You've completely missed the point - this was on a public road against another car - they're not the right conditions no matter what you try vindicating such actions with.

Since when did you speak for everyone with the line of 'no-one's listening' too?

Brybusa - how about you stop your silly little comments and just at least try to understand the point that I was making.

I hold the police is as much distain as anyone when they 'zap' motorists driving well within reasonable limits of vehicles and thei rown capabilities when conditions are right.

You'll note I didn't pick up on your 100mph comment on that basis.

However, 140mph racing against another car on a public road?????

That's just beyond temptation and well over the boundary of dangerous and reckless driving, no matter what the car and no matter what the conditions.

I dont know what other people think but Coastings outburst was a bit uncalled for in my opinion. At the end of the day everyone has put the foot down once in a while including Coasting, if there is one thing I cant stand is people being two faced as they say "people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones"

Below is a quote from one of your postings Coasting, Please dont take this as a personal attack, all I ask is for you to have a think before you attack fellow members about their driving.

From post on the 04-04-05 NE forum

"You're right about the overtaking too.  I pushed it to the redline going past the bikes on the way up past Boulby, but it felt good so hey it must have been okay! (Hmm!).

I had a great little jaunt up Saltburn Bank too, a bit of traction control versus tyre squeal round 3 bends and two auto-blip-downs - much fun!"

As I say nothing personel.

Regards Mark.

What difference does the speed make ?..140MPH on open roads or  blatting past other drivers/riders on B roads?

Either are potentialy dangerous...You and I wasnt there to see either, so cant past judgement

On one occasion it wasnt you driving, so it wasnt OK, the other you was driving and you judged it to be OK

Can't say I've ever noticed anyone "having a go" when I'm out in the M3, but the other day on the way home from work a cooking Escort seemed to be trying it on against me on my 'bike.  Two consecutive sets of traffic lights not all that far apart, both times he took off with a squeal of tyres... then had to stop 200yds down the road for the next set of lights.

I filtered off through the traffic and left him to his stop-start fun.

Steve.

Is it a van or "proper" traffic plod?

Both but mainly un-proper bored council employees. The thing with that road is theres nowehere for them to sit and pull you over in either direction, too many junction opportunities.

But hey I've just got a N.I.P thru for 40 in a 30 in my van!!! Can't even remember seeing a man with a gun (if they send out NIPs does that make them NIPples?)so am gonna contest cos I'm usually near-religious on the road in Q.

Brybusa & still_looking

You are missing the point completely.

We are talking about someone openly admitted to 'racing' at 140mph on a public road!!!!!!!

I was talking about over taking a couple of motor-trikes on an incline with two changedowns for christs sake!!!

I don't have to be there to know there is marked difference between that and someone doing 140mph in a race on a public road!!!

The guy said it himself!!!!!

Sorry, but you're condoning 140mph races on public roads, plain and simple and that is nothing but tantamount to lunacy!

Sorry Coasting im not condoning anything, it is you who is missing the point. You are attacking a fellow poster for the way he drives be it racing or just high speed. You can only criticise others if you are the type of driver who sticks to the speed limits and all other road laws, which you obviously are not. That is my point, below is a quote from another of your posts.

Quote:
Have a drive through the 50 zone at the Washington Services, heard a few people have been caught by the mobile camera van that sits on the central reservation. They just thought it was a works van.

What?  Where!  Jesus!

I drive past there every single day - twice.

I have yet to see a single mobile camera van though.  Not once, and I've never had a beep from the RAII or a ticket through the post, nothing whatsoever.....and I haven't stuck to 50mph either, and far from it on some occasions.

Isnt a forum like TV, if its boring don't watch it?

Stone, you've hit on a point, it's just another example of how some people on here don't like it when someone else has an opinion that they don't share.

People seem to fail to have grasped the concept of a forum as being for discussion.  If someone doesn't agree with me I see little use of intelligence in a response that says "boring", "dull" etc....

Those that can find no argument FOR doing 140mph racing another vehicle on public roads seem to think that quoting me for exceeding the speed limit counters the argument.

Well I'm sorry guys, but it doesn't.  If I do 60 mph in a 50 limit, or even 70, then I'm not doing DOUBLE the speed limit in that zone!  Yes I am breaking the law, but it doesn't mean I can't comment on those that break it at double the legal limit - whilst racing another vehicle.

This topic was started about racing, so the subject matter isn't off topic - so why do some users think they have a right to demand it be locked?

You can either engage in debate or you can try to put me down for having a different opinion.  Personally, I'd prefer people to debate - but that doesn't seem to be what most people want to do on here.

They seem to wants boys to join their manic little yes-men club, and frankly that defines boring much more aptly than any of the analogies given to the word above.

So how about some of you debate the topic instead of contributing one liners - or if that takes too much effort then why not leave it to others to contribute something of meaningful context.

At least still_looking does a bit of research into the subject matter, whilst I argue it is missing the point still - but the plethora of one or two liners commenting on how dull this is does nothing but change a forum into a Lycos like chat room where the subject matter doesn't move forwards.

I'm more than happy to see a reasonable debate but it does get a bit tedious when the same points seem to be being made time after time.

Also I wasn't demanding the thread be locked but expressing the view that I expected it to turn into a slanging match that then broke the forum rules and got locked. It is a credit to those involved that the posts kept above that.

For the record I agree with Coasting that racing on the public road is crazy and reaching speeds of 140mph is totally unacceptable.

On it's own, that speaks volumes and I completely agree with it.

If you drive a fast car, you know you do and why anyone deems it necessary to race on a public road is beyond me.

Perhaps they feel they have something to prove?

Why rise to the bait they offer?  It just encourages more of them to bait more people - and the problem will never go away.

To do it on a track is something altogether different.  It's the right arena, the right circumstances and you're doing it with the same purpose of those that share the track with you - hence no problems at all.

I've no kill-joy, in fact far from it as those that have met me on a club meet will hopefully confirm.  I drive quickly and safely - and I open my car up where the conditions permit - but certainly never to anything near double the speed limit and certainly not racing any other vehicle, fast or not.

It's not my intention to ruin people's fun and love of their vehicles - but I do object to people bragging about reckless driving.

I hope that sets the record straight once and for all (in terms of what my view of this is).

I would agree with that also - see my previous post back a bit.  Those guys paid a serious price and they were nowhere near speeds of 140mph.

As I said also - I wouldn't be an angel on the road and there are times when I deserved to be nabbed, and if I had been well it would have been deserved. BTW its always been well below 140mph and I think its unfair to latch on 140 as anything plus 90 is really covering ground very quickly and needs a controlled environment for any degree of safety.

One critical thing here is racing. If you're racing your focus is not on those around you but on the guy behind and the fastest route ahead.  Your focus will be several points / manouvers ahead - not in the present.  At 140mph the car is travelling at 205 feet/second 60m/sec. If granny in her micra looks down for her handbag and swerves into your lane while mentally you are four cars ahead - its curtains.

That said though - chavs, BMW Drivers, Poker dirvers, whatever can be just as lethal on the road well below the speed limit with stupid actions and showing off.  Speed limits are subjective, I drive a lot in Germany and cover the Autobahns at speed, the difference here is that the other dirvers are expecting cars at speed and are more alert and aware of whats happening.

Users on the road, driving at the speed limit are not expecting traffic coming from behind to be moving at twice their speed. That makes for a lethal situation.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Thats my 2p worth anyway,  and all because coasting called for some intelligent debate.

Well, I have never done 140mph, and have no desire to do such. I would agree that there is no place where such a speed would be acceptable, but then this is a democratic country where people are free to choose how they drive. Nobody can say they have never broken the speed limit, its just that some choose to exceed it to a much greater extent than others - they then choose to accept the risk of a) getting caught, banned and possibly imprisoned, or b) causing an accident, killing an innocent and definitely getting imprisoned. If people choose this course of action then that is their look out, I personally choose to look after my licence a little better. Again I'm not saying I'm blameless, I do break the limits occasionally and one day I may well be brought to task for that. However the potential consequences for doing 40 in a 30 are much less daunting than those for doing 140 in a 70.

I do have one neat and succinct suggestion for those of us who simply cannot keep their foot off the loud pedal. Buy yourself a chevette and then you just know the police will never catch you doing any more than 85!

As you say Coasting people have different opinions the world would be a boring place without them. As for doing 140 mph, well yes I have on a nice straight quite stretch of road after a nightshift, sometimes its nice to open her up after all whats the point of having an M car apart from the eye candy side.

No I wouldnt go racing someone else at that speed because I know my own limits, if someone pushes me the nearest to it would be to accelerate away then slow down and let them pass rather sheepishly. I must admit it is sometimes nice to cruise along the motorway around 65mph and just let everyone else pass, for some strange reason you get better satisfaction than if you are passing everyone else probably because thats what they expect you to do.

Before you say what am I doing driving at high speed after a night shift (being tired and all that) I am very awake due to just having a shower etc.

I won't say that because you're not bragging about racing someone.

As Doive said it is up to individuals what they do after all, but I was commenting on the very specific circumstances of daylight, racing and 140mph - not each of them individually.

I'm far from an angel, otherwise I'd buy a Micra, but it's the ethic of racing others on the roads that I think is the most dangerous thing of all.  I suspect most people grow out of it anyway and once they have children it always adds a new perspective to things as well.

Perhaps I'm just getting very old at 36.  Or is that I am old at 36.

Whichever it is...I'd like to see 37, 38, 39 etc etc so I leave my 'jaunts in gear' to open country lanes where I can see down onto them into the distance and to private roads where I'm lucky enough to be able to get access to and unleash the engine properly.

When you look at the feet or metres covered per second, as highlighted earlier, it certainly puts possible reaction times into perspective too.

I guess I just don't want myself or my family to create or be victim to any nasty statistics more than anything.

Unfortunately people's views of any non-mainstream political party are either 'loony left' or 'racist' and the BNP get tarnished of old. Democracy in Britain is the democratic process of not expressing your views publicly if they might offend the liberal majority.

Back to thread though, if you have an M3 and don't take it on track is there justification of having that much power?

Agree 100% with Stone-IslandM3, you have to track the cars to appreciate their performance.

There is no way I would dare to drive on the road as I do on the track as the line between as fast as possible and out of control is very fine indeed.

Racing cars on public roads should never be condoned. It is dangerous, juvenile and down right idiotic. Invariably its the innocents who are wiped out in things like this and the baffoon behind the wheel of the 'racing' car usually walks away with a slap on the wrist. When I lived on the IOW I helped recover a few cars after racing went sour. Mainly, though not always a hot hatch driven by a 17-18yr old with an immortality complex. The worst was an old XR3i. Four lads, all under 20, were killed. The car had no tax, no insurance, no MOT, 4 bald tyres, loose steering and a catalogue of other problems. None of the lads were wearing seatbelts either. They were racing another car, an XR2i. The police had to find the Fiesta, which was about 10 miles further down the road, the driver and occupants of that car had not realise their mate's had been in an accident, they just thought that the other car was 'too slow' to keep up with them.

There was an idea floated of putting the wrecks of these cars on trailers and parking them outside schools and colleges as a 'gentle reminder' of what might happen if the kids insist on racing each other. The idea however was squashed due to parents and teachers thinking it would have been too gruesome for the kids to have to see.

Personally I would have done it, cos it might bring it home to a few of the idiots that they are not immortal and it can so easily happen to them.

Racing is foolish, selfish and stupid if done for 'fun' on a public road. Keep it to the track where its regulated and if an accident does occur, there are ways and means to deal with it.

Agree, though not with the VW angle. None of 'em seem to give a rat's rear that 9 times out of 10 I've got 1 or both of my daughters in the car with me......which b4 anyone starts to have a go is exactly when I religiously stick to limits and watch my driving even more than usual.

Concur totally.  I have pulled over with my 2 year old in the car before (which no-one behind me would be able to see in the Cab) and got out to blast a driver on two occasions.

One was deliberately getting as close to the rear as possible (unfortunately another BMW driver in a 330) and the other was a Van driver with a load of workers in.  Both actually became apologetic but that wouldn't always be the case.

I find people go out of their way to cause bother when they have an inferior car.

Theres a set of lights near where I live with two lanes....one left/straight on and the right hand lane just straight on which then goes back to one lane app 200 yards further up.

I was in the right hand lane doing 40mph maybe slower (40 limit) and a guy Id seen well behind in his Skoda fellatio estate seemed to be coming up on the inside quite quickly as the road merged back into one then decided to shake his head and wave his fist as if Id done something wrong.......he wouldnt discuss it with me when we got to the next set of light which were on red as he went through them when I got out of my car.

Oh and Cinq/Scecentos are the worsth cars for trying to race....Im too old, I just smile and indicate to let them by.

I was always a 'target' for silliness. Two reasons I found for this were 1) being a female driver, and 2) driving a 3ltr turbo car.

The times I had challenges at the lights and roundabouts from kids in Nova's and XR2 etc. I hardly had to put the foot on the gas pedal to leave them behind, but they still kept on trying. Poor little things.

I did have the pleasure, more than once, of pulling said fools up and giving them a long talk about how not to drive..in a way that only they would understand...then it was a case of 'sorry, won't do it again' and a terrified face peering out of the window at this ranting female using expletives.

Challenging at lights etc is just plain DUMB! Regardless of the car type, its stupid, moronic, dangerous and just makes you look juvenile.

TBH I was only gonna give him a bollocking and lecture him about the short falls of road rage.....personally having started to drive a bit more recently I have noticed a massive change in manners on the road.....people just dont have any and thats what it all boils down to.

I wont let anybody in anymore because no-one will ever let me in. When I do get a touch of guilt and let someone in they never acknowledge.....Even a little movement of the head....bit like a tick but that would do!!!!!!

Sorry

I agree with falkster iam a driving instructor and doesnt really matter if on a lesson with a pupil in my fiesta or driving my m3 there are no manners on the road  people try to race you so they can get to the next red light before you!

Myself, I do drive quickly. Although when I catch people up, I never sit close up behind. Whats the point? You just ask for trouble, get stone chips on the front of your car and you will probably arrive at your destination slower as you have infuriated the driver in front and he would probably drive slower as he is trying to prove a point to you.

Personally, I feel unsafe driving at 30MPH. Unless in built up areas, and where alot of people, not to mention schools are, I always keep with the flow of traffic, keeping a decent distance behind the car in front.

If a boy-racer lines up next to me at the traffic lights, I let them go. Who knows who maybe watching? Who knows what they have under thier bonnets? and who knows what thier driving is like? Once you are infront, you feel the need to drive faster and maybe more recklessly than them to get away. Whats the point in that?

If someone gets very close up behind, then I do as I said in my previous post, although it depends on where you are. On country roads, it is rare that I have anyone close up behind as I do tend to press on a bit, but the same applies, if I come up behind anyone, I do so without scaring the wits ot of them and overtake them giving them plenty of room and not cutting them up.

Motorways... I again, feel unsafe driving at 70MPH in the car. In the truck I have no choice, thats all it will do. At 70 I find you overtake a car, only to be overtaken by the same car 2 miles up the road, you get people struggling to pass you, you get other cars pulling out on you, you get people speed up while you are trying to overtake, it goes on and on. I feel more comfortable at 85MPH where you are overtaking practically everything, but not at a silly stupid speed which frightens others. You do still get overtaken, but who cares? The ones who hog the middle lane really do get my goat! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! These are the people who cause accidents, as they are plain oblivious to anything but keeping between the slow lane and the fast lane - NO MATTER WHAT! I even see it at 3-4am when nothing is about. They just will NOT get over.

RANT OVER!

Oh, I have never felt the need to get out and slam a driver about his "driving". I have hardly ever had cause to blow the horn either. Except to people who slow down and turn up a side road without indicating. There are bad drivers, obviously. But why get heated up about someone elses problem? Stay cool and calm.

What are you going for now then, a scooby? as i'm sure i've seen a stone-island on scoobynet and i'm guessing there can't be too many people with that id mate?

That'll be me. Wouldnt be seen dead in a scoob though, if that was in the offing it'd be the Mitsu Evo.

Looking around at minute but narrowed to either higher mileage lat 90s E39 523 or mid-90s E34 525/530.

Whatever I get I'm planning on 18months before upping to E46 M3 or E39 M5.

guys

having owned an M3 for a week, I find its the blokes in the slightly horsepowered rep mobiles ie A4 3.0's, volvo t5's, modeo St220's that all try to prove something, especially if they have their mrs in the car.

they don't realise you can catch em and overtake them (safely of course) no matter what (legal) speed they are doing !  It makes me laugh everytime.

Have had a few chav admira's but no idiots yet thanks goodness.

I can beat you up a twisty Scottish road in a Standard Astra TDS with standard 175/65HR14 tyres fitted. Seriously, I totally impressed a mate who had an 850T5R who raced Karts with me. He couldn't catch me in my M'reg Astra TD! When we got to the kart track I thought he was gonna drag me out the car and smack me one, instead he shock my hand and said "I've never seen a car driven like that before!" His passenger even had to have a look at the tyres on my car to see what size the were. Julian, the guy who traveled with me to the circuit looked like he saw a ghost. LOL!

Looking back, we were travelling at horrendous speeds, down a country road which makes "the big one" at Blackpool look like a motorway. If we'd have been caught, they would have thrown away the key! Long time ago now.

Your T5 is a nice car mate, but the image is a little lacking!

Is that English?

The only T5 with any degree of style or presence was a late 1980s Vespa.Nuff said.

Are they FWD? if so don't they have a limit of about 220 bhp, Saab has produced a car over this - but apparently anything over 220 doesn't help in the handling (Top Gear thingy a while back).

yeah they're FWD, 220 at the front is a theoretical limit however alfa do that gts hot hatch with 250 at the front wheels and some fiat coupes have over 300 but it must be soooo undriveable it seems hardly worth it

the diff in the focus RS is supposed to handle massive amounts of power but not really road friendly, more of a track developed weapon

RWD all the way

yes, they are front wheel drive, and about 250 is the limit (back in the day an astra gte 16v with 150 was considered a torque steer monster), i have an old issue of performance car from 1991 that had a roadtest of the t5 - nice car, shame about the lack of front grip, and that was bog standard, not an T5-R with overboost, or the 850R that replaced it.

nowadays, cars have too much power going through wheels that have to cope with steering as well, this is why you need clever diffs and traction control to try and at least get reasonable mileage out of a pair of front tyres, even in normal driving.  its why cars such as the ford focus rs are apparently all but undriveable on typical british b roads, and cars that dont have any such assistance burn up their tyres in no time (alfa 147 gta for example)

a little useless fact about the 850 T5R and 850R

"The 850 T5R badge was used only in 1995, the name was reduced to 850 R in 1996. The 850 T5R and 850 R are the top of the line, with the engine power increased to a peak of 250hp with std (240 with auto) by raising the max Turbo pressure for 30s"

Read this thread lads and although I only own a 330 Club Sport, have to agree with all the coments about Saxo/Corsa/Audi etc drivers. I love it pulling away from the lights, I have never been beaten away from them and don't have to wheel spin to do it ! You should see then sitting there revving and revving and then looking stupid as I leave them for dead

I have kept out of this thread so far but the steam is now blowing out of my ears

i disagree with a lot of what has been said so far

until recently my daily smoker was a fiat uno which i used for runs to the station, shops etc

evo sport, M6 and competition prepared lotus cortina all live in the garage

i am a car enthusiast
i love driving
i dont drive like an idiot
i am an experienced motorsport competitor

BUT whenever i was smoking around in the uno the behaviour of motorists in more expensive cars was unbelievable

clearly, they found my presence on the road in front of them an irritation and it was obvious from my rear view mirror that they expected me to get out of the way or just disappear completely

i think there are a few indications in this thread that SOME of you are leaning towards this attitude and it does you no credit

sorry, but a high handed attitude and flash cars go together just as easily as the chav nova stereotype
